steve-in-kville wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 6:55 am I'd venture to guess the majority of flagged threads are in the Politics forum. I'd also venture to guess the flags come from the same few people.
And from the same people about the same people. There are those who carry grudges against others who have provided honest accountability feedback.
Just like my workplace: there's always that one person running to the HR office every other day... :(

i guess the flags are the exclamation point options that go to mods? :?
but posters don’t see them, do they?

i’ve rarely used them, don’t think about them. i think i use them to add an occasional explanation, or ask a question?
i don’t recall getting any feedback, so, they seem to get “lost in space.”

on open forum, i was “given notice”/teased one time (by oj) about over use of hearts.
it was early on with Robert’s heart option. i quickly had pages of hearts.  guilty.

i suppose i’m still guilty. i carry guilt. does guilt count?? :? :?

They should not, but it does happen.

BTW, now that I am working at the local hardware store, every time I walk past the Weber grills, which is 100 times a day, I think of you.
Can you see if you have any Weber 7445 tables in stock?

This is going right over my head which is getting too common for me.

What is a flagged post and how does it show up as being flagged ?

Are there flagged threads too ? If so, how do these show up as flagged ?

They are US flags; I don't think they show up north of the border.

No, seriously ... there's several buttons at the top right of each post. One of them is an exclamation point, which reports the post to The Team and gives you a place to include comments. One of us (generally whoever sees it first) will likely take appropriate action, whether it's moving a post, splitting a thread, editing out objectionable material, or whatever. Sometimes we follow up by PM. Sometimes we confer with the rest of The Team. Sometimes we just  and close the report. But it does get our attention more efficiently than leaving a "moderator please do something" comment in the thread or PMing an individual moderator.

How many posts are flagged in an average day? How many are flagged on a heavy day?

What are the most common reasons people give for flagging posts?

Does flagging tend to reduce hostility if used well? If so, what is the right way to use it? In general, what guidance would moderators give for flagging posts?

steve,
i recall a very worthwhile informal “tutorial”/request to members by Robert to use this option .. i hope it can be resurrected.
he’s mentioned it, made suggestions/requests now+then. recently, he shared he was glad to find some members using it ..

his post may be in this thread, directed to boot, and all .. ?? i’m not sure. he may recall.

the search function is disturbed, or i would do a quick search for it.
also, busy with some planting for my daughter.

Page 11: 2018. Robert speaks about flagging posts:
i added arrows+icons. underlines are Robert’s.
Robert wrote: ↑Mon Aug 06, 2018 11:35 pm This thread is developing a lot of irony.

Bootstrap, who champions me or others against you when you become passive aggressive or so locked in on what you have decided we mean?

Who steps in when Josh becomes so authoritative that he tells others what they think and are saying, or minimizes another so they feel shut down?

And Max can be so fixated that he is right that he sees no need to discuss because he just knows he is right.

All three of you are very strong willed and controlling in your own way. Each thinks they know how others should act, yet it is the actions of the three of you that sets a strong tone here. You three are frequent posters and help set the tone and standard others follow. So if you want it, be it. Quit telling everyone else how to be and do it yourselves.

So is that direct and confrontational enough? You want the mods to control things more.
If I did, I would have to remove 50% of what many post.
So then MN would just be my way instead of a community coming together and growing together.
Each person has an equal right to have a voice and share their perspective, even if they are wrong.
How else do we learn from each other unless we listen and share, even our wacky ideas? Yes, we can hold each other accountable, but there is a caring way to do it and a way that minimizes another by bombarding them with "facts" or talk down to them just to prove how smart and righteous the elitist is. :-|

 Lastly, if someone is being picked on, treated harshly, then flag the post itself.
That lets us evaluate it.
If action needs to be taken, we can and will.
We have before. We will again.
This is not to be used if you just disagree with the posters opinions.
This is to be used if there is mistreatment.
This is the way to deal with someone picking on someone or treating them too harshly.

 I would personally rather the person being attacked would do the reporting of the post.
We often will misjudge what is upsetting or harsh to someone else. If you suspect, then ask the poster.
 Do not dictate, but ask an open question. If they respond, great, if not, let it go.
If the person being harassed is upset, tell them to report the post.
This is really the best way.

There is more interesting reading on Page 11 and on the early pages. i recommend review. :)

i’m not sure if this is “the” post of Robert’s i remembered. he’s addressed flagging now+then. i found each post helpful.
(i rarely/never flag.) i try to pay attention. :)

I have the quote marks button and this exclamation button. I never thought of trying this out before to see where it took me. Interesting feature and one some must have used on my tendency toward bunny trails.

I had turned off private messaging as I didn't want to get involved in forum cliques but I see it can be used in a good way to let me know how others feel about my posts and we can talk it out aside from the open forum conversations. I will turn it back on so feel free to let me know when you think I need to consider what or how I am saying things. I just don't want to be part of a group that agrees in their negative opinion of someone.
