What should we do with JohnL?

I believe JohnL is telling the truth.

I believe JohnL is not being entirely truthful, but he and MaxPC are not the same person.

(That statement was not entirely clear, but I am assuming that what was being said is that JohnL posted from the same IP address as did MaxPC. If this is what was meant, then one should consider all situations in which this might be possible. Do IP addresses ever get reused, as is the case with telephone numbers? I do not know.)

EDIT:
A brief search brought up this result. (My understanding is that whereas your telephone number 'belonged to you' until you intentionally relinquished it, your IP Address can be changed by providers without your knowledge.)

Yes, IP addresses can be reassigned. The chance of MaxPC's phone number being reassigned within four months after his "death" to another individual who promptly gets on MennoNet and starts posting is really quite remote.
Well, you know Max did start using a computer at a public library after giving up his smart phone. Said he didn't need it after retiring from full-time RVing. Perhaps John found the same PC?

I suppose I still have some doubts about what's going on.
I voted I don't know what to believe about this.
I'm neutral to John's fate.

Seems obvious they are the same. I would support a ban.

About two years ago when things came to a head like this with Max I wrote a somewhat long post explaining what I was pretty sure was going on with Max. Rereading that post, I'm fairly confident everything I said is correct and holds up. Here's a short excerpt from that:
Pelerin wrote: ↑Wed Feb 14, 2024 9:07 pm So what then? We have other Catholics and non-Anabaptists posting here (if the real Max is actually Catholic). I don’t know how Max is in real life—my experience is that pathological liars in real life are very destructive—but here on an Internet forum he seems pretty harmless. Most of his posts seem like someone who’s genuinely participating. He’s playing a character and he doesn’t need to be. Unfortunately he will probably never be able to admit that to us no matter how absurdly thin the facade stretches.
Drop the facade. Post as you are.

That must have been a temporary measure, as he later sometimes posted during hours a public library would not likely be open.

This was quite an investigation on max and now JohnL, you should see if the FBI is hiring

Its actually trivially easy to look up IP on the forums.

The investigation on so called plain Catholics was far more exhaustive.

I was thinking about OJ paying attention to what tine he was posting- I’m trying to understand what potential harm Max or JohnL has by their posting- to me I never felt they were trying to influence people Way from Anabaptism but instead seemed to admire them. And learn. Example Max was also on “Amish America” website/social media do he had a genuine interest & admiration.

Valerie,

Does it bother you at all that the MaxPC-JohnL person was obviously lying, which means they were making a lot of this stuff up?

Having "genuine interest & admiration" in something that is fake / made up doesn't somehow make it any better. I would argue it makes it even worse.

Apparently I’m not sure they were lying (yet) so maybe that’s my fault for not piecing together the case against them.
Wonder if that’s the case- that they were/are lying- why?

There is a preponderance of evidence that JohnL and MaxPC are the same person, or at least using the same home Internet connection. This is something the mods can easily see and confirm.

As far as "why", none of us know - it would be up to the person who calls themself MaxPC / JohnL to try to explain it to us.
