Deaths

Post by RZehr »

Been sitting here this evening listening to a cassette tape recording of my wife’s dads funeral. My wife was about 3 weeks old when her father was killed in 1981. I’ve never heard the funeral recording before.
In the middle of a busy life, it’s a good experience that puts life and death and eternity back in proper perspective. I wonder how her life would be different had he lived. Makes one think of all the people who have passed on. The brevity of life. How soon we are forgotten or will be forgotten. I wish I could have met him, and I wish he could see his grandchildren. He was driving a tractor on the road, and as he was turning into a field, he was broadsided by a truck and killed instantly. He was 29 years old.

What a marvelous meditation for us all to consider! Thank you, RZehr.

The older I get, the more I think about just how this life is 'but a fleeting vapour that appears for a short time and then vanishes away'. My son took his own life at the age of 16. I, too, often think of what might have been to now perhaps have grandchildren, etc had he lived on. Whenever I pass a graveyard it has a much different impact on my eternal perspective than it did in earlier years. I do have to watch though that I don't get depressed with regrets. Regrets I have many.

But the sting of death is not the same for the believer. Our next conscience moment will be with Lord. With regard to that the apostle Paul said for him to live is Christ and to die is gain. His preference would be to die. Interesting how he called it a choice. Philippians 1:21-26.

We had a lot of deaths in our circles last year. Farming accidents, truck accidents, some stillborns. Middle aged men having heart problems. One thing is for certain: none of us have been granted eternal life on earth. Any of us could be gone in a moment’s notice.

I am so sorry to hear that. Never lost a family member to that but I have lost a few co-workers over the years.

The year before my wife and I met, she lost three male cousins to HIV. Two left behind widows and children. The other was in a serious relationship.

My dad lost his dad at 17. My wife lost her dad at an early age as well.

Blessings to you.

My first wife's cousin died at age 16 in a car crash. Then her brother was killed in another car crash at age 16. A few years later my son died also at age 16. You hear people say things come in 3s and although that is most often not the case, it did in our family. 3 young men all remarkably at the age of 16.

Looking back and remembering how I drove a car at age 16, it is amazing I made it through my teen years. Some near misses though that I still recall. If my parents only knew the crazy things we tried with a car. I do know I was in their prayers often.

Suicide ? Came close when my wife left with my son. All glory to God who has brought me through some dark times.

I often think back to the dark times and wonder why God spared me. Some scary moments, for sure.
