Thanks for the chuckle this morning. I am so glad the "smish" pay taxes like everyone else.I have had to enlighten people many times that Smish do indeed pay taxes AND do not take from government that they pay into (although many will come back with ways they do benefit) just saying it’s a common misconception they don’t pay taxes.

I think Smish has showed up before. AI must be adjusting accordingly.Grace wrote: ↑Wed May 06, 2026 10:14 amThanks for the chuckle this morning. A wee little man can’t say, I’m sorry. A big man owns his mistakes and apologizes.
A wee little man trusts himself and his own discernment. A big man is humble enough to know that he needs the counsel and input of others.

Response:Do the Smish pay taxes in the US? Do they receive government benefits?
Yes. The Amish generally do pay taxes in the U.S., but they have a few specific religious exemptions. They also generally avoid government benefits, though there are some limited exceptions.
Taxes the Amish Pay
The Amish pay most of the same taxes other Americans pay, including:
- Federal income tax
- State income tax
- Property tax
- Sales tax
- Business taxes
- Capital gains tax
What They Are Exempt From
Many Amish are exempt from:
- Social Security taxes
- Medicare taxes
Important details:
- They must waive their right to receive Social Security and Medicare benefits in return.
- This exemption mainly applies to self-employed Amish or Amish working for Amish employers.
- Amish working for non-Amish employers may still have payroll taxes withheld.
Generally, the Amish try not to rely on government assistance. Their communities traditionally provide financial help, medical assistance, elder care, disability support, and help after disasters through church and community mutual aid.
Usually Avoided
Most Amish avoid Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, and unemployment insurance because accepting these programs conflicts with their religious emphasis on community responsibility and separation from the state.
But There Are Exceptions
Reality is a little more complicated than the stereotype.
Some Amish individuals or communities may use certain public services or benefits, especially emergency medical care, disaster relief, public roads, occasional Medicaid for catastrophic medical expenses, and public schooling accommodations in some situations.
Different Amish groups are stricter or looser about this. The Amish are not one centralized organization. Some communities are more conservative than others.
Bottom line: The Amish generally pay normal taxes except Social Security and Medicare taxes, and they generally avoid government benefits, relying instead on community support systems. But there are occasional exceptions depending on the community and situation.

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

I’m curious how the Amish would opt out using public roads.Bootstrap wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2026 11:12 am Some Amish individuals or communities may use certain public services or benefits, especially emergency medical care, disaster relief, public roads, occasional Medicaid for catastrophic medical expenses, and public schooling accommodations in some situations.

Those are called "Rocket Amish" a old group but not as old as some. I’m using external anthropological terminology.
I bet the Smish don’t have all those hot romances described in those books either.
