2001 was the last balanced budget presented in Congress. Since then we have chosen unfunded war and tax cuts, several rounds of each.
Without 911 I don't think President Trump would have risen to prominence by appealing to birtherism, a conspiracy theory that the sitting president was a foreigner and a Muslim.
911 led directly to the patriot act which formed new government agencies to keep the American people safe on their streets. These agencies now oversee a billion dollar internal police force that has killed several people on those streets.
Policing took a hard turn toward militarization and general expansion since 911. Many police forces now have automatic weapons and military style assault vehicles.
Americans are more accustomed to military style police walking their streets. I remember when they showed up in NYC with automatic weapons and body armor. It was shocking back then.
American Muslim communities have turned more inward with the cultural and government reactions to them in the years following 911.
Just a few of the changes I have seen.

i’m perfectly comfortable with an older, wiser, more docile Trump.

“For 25 years, an ordinary New Jersey train station parking lot has held an extraordinary reminder of the lives lost on 9/11.
Middletown Township lost 37 residents that day — the largest loss of life from any community outside the five boroughs — and the cars they left behind became a haunting symbol of those who never came home.
Now, a memorial garden beside the station keeps their memories alive, with a monument and photograph honoring each of the 37 victims.
Twenty-five years later, the community continues to remember the people who left for work that morning and never returned.

“On September 11, 2001, the United States made an unprecedented decision.
Every civilian aircraft in American airspace had to land immediately.
This video follows the events minute by minute as air traffic controllers, pilots, military commanders, and government officials struggled to understand what was happening.
Hijacked planes had already struck the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, while thousands of other aircraft remained in the sky.
FAA National Operations Manager Ben Sliney, on his very first day in the job,
ordered a nationwide ground stop and then made the extraordinary call to clear the entire sky. More than 4,500 aircraft had to be brought safely to the ground while international flights were diverted to Canada and fighter jets scrambled to intercept possible threats. Confusion made everything more dangerous. False hijacking reports, missing aircraft, misunderstood radio messages, and delayed military orders meant innocent passenger planes were sometimes moments away from being treated as hostile targets.
By 12:16 p.m., American civilian airspace was finally empty.
It was one of the largest and most extraordinary emergency operations in aviation history.”
