Justice Gorsuch: Too much human law

Post by temporal1 »

This is something i’ve questioned for years+years. Too much human law.
It first hit me when i noticed a local headline, to the effect, “The new year brings 600+ new laws in Illinois” -
it didn’t strike me as sensational, just “another year, another vast number of new laws!” ..
State law. Not including local or federal. The numbers horrified me. Out of control.

i’ve listened once. i’ll listen again.

The one thing i’d like him to address is:
What is the responsibility of CITIZENS in our U.S. government for allowing too much human law?
U.S. legal citizens aren’t meant to be hapless, silent victims of government. (They may choose to be.)
My question is, what was the original plan? - i don’t think “this” was it.

Lengthy video, and worthwhile:

Ben Shapiro / The Human Toll of Too Much Law | Justice Neil Gorsuch / 44min
Description:
In this episode of the Sunday Special, Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch joins us to discuss his latest book,
”Over Ruled: The Human Toll of Too Much Law."

With his signature judicial clarity, Justice Gorsuch explores the effects of our government’s expanding federal criminal code and the real-world consequences when seemingly innocuous activities entangle citizens with federal law. Justice Gorsuch shares the stories of Americans whose livelihoods have been negatively impacted by overregulation, and why he remains an “incorrigible optimist” about the future of our nation.

This conversation is essential listening from one of our country’s sharpest legal minds!
^^Ben S does a good job of listening. :)

Bio / Neil Gorsuch
Formerly a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, Neil Gorsuch was confirmed as the 113th justice of the U.S. Supreme Court in 2017.

As a contrast to human law:

2020 / Law to Love / Psalm 119

From ancient MD history: ante-2016 :P
Skyler quoted:
Psalm 119:97 “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long.”

Does Justice Gorsuch argue for less human laws or less Federal laws? From what I know of his ideology, he is probably in favor of lessening Federal laws and "leaving things up to the states". Aside from however anyone feels about whether this philosophy is best or worst, it will probably create more laws, not less.

And the headline you shared about "600+ new laws for Illinois" would be the direct result of lessening Federal laws, since that headline is referring to state laws... something that should make Justice Gorsuch very happy.

The Bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand we are obliged to act accordingly.

Is all law enforced by governments "human law"? Is there another category?

The way you phrase this seems to imply that God is against human law. Or that God is against having lots of laws, perhaps? What exactly are you saying here?

I agree that Christians should focus on God's laws - and that God's laws are summarized in the greatest commandment. But what does that tell us about human laws?

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

Well, if you believe your Bible and Romans 13, then every single one of those new laws was ordained by God.

The Bible doesn't say that... please open it and read it...
