Things that are not part of politics happening presently and how we approach or address it as Anabaptists.

MN as a news source

Aside from Mennonet, I don’t get news unrelated to war/conflicts.
I actually rely on MennoNet to stay updated on what's going on.
This is often where I first encounter the news, too. But ... how good is MN as a news source? What are its strengths and weaknesses?

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

I can pretty much assume the "type" of news based upon the poster.

I don’t go here for news.
It’s incidental to the political views of the members here which gives a mix of three views effectively.

MD-MN is about “Mennonites and others connecting” .. for discussion, opinions, etc.
Not a news source (in my opinion).

i see lots of news-based content here i wouldn’t otherwise see.
It’s not a news source.

This forum has been like a public library for me.
The content is there to sort through and enjoy. Reader caution and discretion advised.

An interesting library wherein authors are readily accessible to readers.
The mix of authors is of great appeal. No one has sifted through to eliminate the undeserving.

Minimal sifting. :P

DIY sifting.

Me neither.

But ... how's that going? Seems that's the last thing we seem to be able to focus on. Seems like other agendas get in the way. Some of them political.

I see plenty of discussion happening and opinions being shared.

I believe MN is an excellent source of news and diverse articles, ranging from theological discussions to health recommendations.

A positive aspect is the filtering of inappropriate material, which is easily found on social media, where most people consume their information.

For subjects unrelated to news, yes, I am in good discussions where people share a variety of opinions.

Weird things happen whenever anything touches on certain political sensibilities. As though they are somehow more sacred than what we say we believe in, and normal conversation is somehow dangerous for these topics.

Predictable trolling patterns.

The atmosphere would change markedly if that could stop.

As I said recently, Lesterb tried to get a discussion started on the 7 churches in Revelation 2 & 3 & it fell flat. When I said that the other day Barnhart said he would be interested but nothing got going.
I have noticed this through the years do many potentially good Biblical discussions seem to have much less interest or fie quickly.

Regarding getting news here, that’s why there is a current events category. As I discovered so many don’t get important latest news, which may or may not affect you personally, but it certainly can’t lead you to care and concern and prayer for others.

I am a life long Christian, but have only recently started looking into Church history and I have recently moved to an area with at least 3 different Mennonite groups so I am interested in learning about their traditions and beliefs.

Poking around I see there are believers of many different traditions, but having very sane conversations.

i was encouraged to read this.
