A wee little man can’t say, I’m sorry. A big man owns his mistakes and apologizes.
A wee little man trusts himself and his own discernment. A big man is humble enough to know that he needs the counsel and input of others.

Re: New York City
Can anyone explain to me why there is one full time government employee for every 30 people living in NYC?
Please keep answers as factual as possible without taking political potshots.

As a child- Radio City Music Hall at Christmas. That was in the 60s. The Rockefeller center- again from 60s. The Museum of Natural History and Statue of Liberty- again from 60s- going there for school trips.
Haven't been there since the 90s when we went as a family with my mom and dad. Too crowded for me now.

Well - at a quick glance, almost half of them are school staff (132 K), and 20% (47K) are police who are managing the 8 million residents and the 63 million annual visitors and a few million daily commuters. Lots of Administrative folks, public service folks, transportation folks, etc.
My town of 2000 probably has a worse ratio if teachers, police, administration and sanitation are all considered.

Re: New York City
A place near and dear to my heart. All of my children were born there and we had great birthing experiences at the New York Hospital of Queens. A lot of great people that I love a lot are there. My kife was enriched by living there.

That seems odd, since my county of 32,000 has 35 employees in the sheriffs' department, or about 1 for every 1,000 people. (There are a few extra volunteer deputies who primarily work at the county fair or other festivals.)Dan Z wrote: ↑Fri Nov 21, 2025 7:01 pmWell - at a quick glance, almost half of them are school staff (132 K), and 20% (47K) are police who are managing the 8 million residents and the 63 million annual visitors and a few million daily commuters. The nearby village has 10 officers (17 total employees) for a village with population of 3,600, or 1 for every 360 people.
Apparently New Yorkers need a much higher ratio of 1 officer for every 170 people.
The local school district is around 11,500 people, and government statistics report there are 278 (approximately) employees. That's 1 in every 41 people, so I guess New Yorkers don't need as many teachers / school staff where the numbers above would be 1 for every 60.
Perhaps people in NYC prioritise law enforcement over education.

Re: New York City
I went there once in 1974. I spent 3 days staying with friends. Took a train and arrived at Grand Central Station. Saw Times Square. Went to the Statue of Liberty and the top of the Empire State Building. Tried the various foods. Came home and have zero inclination to visit again. It was too crowded for me.

I don't have the stats to hand but the police forces were dramatically ramped up after 911 with federal national security money. The NYPD acquired what is essentially a military wing, very heavily armed. Once that money went away the force was not proportionally de-escalated. During the defund the police moment, I said it might be good to return to the pre-911 levels of funding, but it seems they don't listen to me. That increased level of police power might account for some of the 1/30 number.
Another factor to consider is the number of Federal and State agencies that are located in NYC. I wouldn't expect a small rural town to host many Federal Court officials, NTSA officials, Securities and Exchange officials etc...
