Texas river flood leaves at least 13 dead and 20 children missing; camp evacuated by helicopter

That is about 5 hours from us. We got hit with heavy rains tonight also. We are having family camp at the campground this weekend. All we had to do was shift outside games and fireworks until tomorrow night.

Sad situation.

we get a lot of weather here in the Midwest from Texas and the Gulf, heat, humidity, wind, rains, tornadoes, hurricane aftermath .. flash floods can be .. this one was like a tsunami in scale, damage, loss of life.

Lord have mercy on all these children and parents and please intervene and rescue. This is grievous news

One girl has been found alive 12 miles downstream. She grabbed a tree and climbed up onto a branch.

In about a week, I will try to make contact with the Anabaptists in Bastrop, TX to see if they are going to get involved. ANyone with contact there please PM me.

The current count is 51 dead, including 15 children. Two dozen campers are still missing.

That part of Texas is known as “flash flood alley” and is the most prone part of the entire country to flash floods. Partly because of topography and partly because of geology. The ground has a thin hard clay soil layer over limestone so doesn’t absorb much water. That part of Texas has also been in a severe drought so the ground was rock hard and water just runs off.

The floods also came in the middle of the night and Texas doesn’t really have a good system of flood alerts. They have a cell phone flash alert system but they have made a complete and total mess of it by using it for endless amber alerts and other police related stuff so people just get tired of being woken in the middle of the night to some crime alert and turn it off. Also who knows what kind of flood alerts the state sent out in the middle of the night. The National Weather Service issued flash floods alerts for that part of the state hours earlier but the warning system is state-based and not part of NWS which just does forecasting.

So there is a good chance they were just hit by flash floods without any warning. I guess we will eventually find out what sort of actual warnings were issued by the state.
