Trump said so far the the U.S. will not be providing support to Israel for the airstrikes, so for now, they're on their own.

Not just military and nuclear sites. Residential buildings hit as well.

Is there any basis at all for the idea the U.S. / Israel can just indiscriminately attack Iran and assassinate its leaders on their own soil?

Yeah this happened with full knowledge and likely agreement of the United States.
