Russo-Ukrainian Crisis

Post by Ernie »

This is a thread to discuss the situation of Russian troops amassing at the border with Ukraine, as well as the response of Ukraine and NATO.

Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021%E2%8 ... ian_crisis
In March and April 2021, Russia massed about 100,000 soldiers and military equipment near its border with Ukraine, representing the highest force mobilization since the country's annexation of Crimea in 2014. This precipitated an international crisis and generated concerns over a potential invasion. Satellite imagery showed movements of armor, missiles, and other heavy weaponry. The troops were partially removed by June. The crisis was renewed in October and November 2021, when over 100,000 Russian troops were again massed near the border by December.
This thread is also a place to discuss how various professing Christians (both individuals and churches) respond to a situation like this.

I read the other day that Russia is telling its people that NATO is preparing for an invasion of Russia with the goal of deposing Putin.

The timing of the press is interesting to say the least. This has been an ongoing thing for years at this point. Not to say Russia wouldn't do something but its interesting that now its important enough to care about.
What are our people in Ukraine doing?

Yes and no. The civil war in the Donbas has been going on for years with Russian supported separatists troops, as well as unmarked, possibly Russian troops ("The Little Green Men"). This heightened tension with overt Russian threats to invade Ukraine if its demands aren't met is more recent.

From what I've heard, the relationship between Russian and Ukrainian Christians, which has been in bad shape for years since the annexation of the Crimea is really, really bad now.

Are you referring to Orthodox Christians only, or others as well?

It would be more accurate to say that NATO is amassing troops and weapons at the border with Russia, which is a very belligerent act. NATO promised a long time ago they wouldn't expand into Ukraine.
I read the other day that Russia is telling its people that NATO is preparing for an invasion of Russia with the goal of deposing Putin.
All I've heard from the U.S. press for the last 6 years is that Putin is an evil mastermind who stole an American election by electing Trump.

What exactly is NATO preparing for? Do they want to get into a hot war with Russia? Expanding NATO into Ukraine is an act of aggression. Russia, China, and their many other allies remain quite united that they don't want this.

This sounds like state-sponsored propaganda. Is the relationship somehow worse than it used to be?

I mean, are you telling me that it's in worse shape than, say, the situation with Christianity in the U.S.S.R. was in the 1980s?

News rhythms, cycles, patterns. Political expediency. Distraction. Election years.
Failed economies. Disgruntled complaining citizens. The usual.

It would be interesting to hear from forum members with ties to Ukraine. :)
