that being said, i do think that the Bible indicates that a person does need to take care of the widows and orphans. so yes, in my opinion, there is a requirement to work hard to take care of someone who in your mind doesn't deserve it. you do have an obligation to take care of the babies that are created.
If Christians have a suffering servant mindset, that leaves no room for resentment toward those who need help. And women who feel it will be very difficult to raise a child .... surely these mothers are the kind of people we should want to love and serve if we want to follow the example of Jesus.

Yes, people will say, "does he know what kind of woman ...", just as they did in the time of Jesus. "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone". Christianity is not about judging and gossiping and resenting. Christianity is not a political special interest group that objects to tax money being used to help people.

If we believe in the Kingdom of God, we should ask ourselves how to use this as an opportunity to serve and be a visible witness to the love of Jesus. Praise God that many lives will be saved - now how can we help?

The far better and more Christian approach would be to make more adoptions unnecessary by supporting women and families more.

Require mandatory paid maternity leave of 6-9 months for all pregnant women so women can take time off to have babies
Provide universal free childcare so that women can afford to go back to work after having children if the choose to or need to
Provide universal free healthcare so that people aren't burdened with the costs of maternity care, child birth, and infant care.

Many countries can and do provide these things. And have far far fewer unwanted children as a result. The US is singularly cruel in how it treats young mothers and pregnant women compared to most other countries of comparable income. But here in the US it is more important that stockholders of companies like Amazon and Wal-Mart maximize their wealth rather than care for their employees and society.
The far more Christian approach would be to make theft and murder unnecessary by supporting thieves and criminals more. Should we decriminalize those things?
So in your world pregnant women are the equivalent of criminals?
A pregnant woman who kills her unborn child so that her figure isn't ruined by the pregnancy is no better than someone who kills a person so they can take that person's wallet.

Both of you seem to be saying that the Christian approach is a government policy. Christians are not really in a position to decriminalize things or to create social programs. That's really Caesar's jurisdiction. I think the Christian approach is to love and serve those who need help, to pray for them, to care, to be like Jesus.

I do think that those of us who vote should consider voting in ways that are pro-life, both before and after birth, protecting children before and after they are born. But that is really Caesar's jurisdiction. I think the proposals Ken makes are extremely unlikely in modern America, though.

Perhaps women should get married before having a baby.

I checked my Bible and it doesn’t say I need to work hard to make life easy for women who sleep around.
perhaps men should get married before making babies.

i do think that my Bible would indicate that a man who doesn't provide for his family, (the babies he makes) is worse than an infidel. meaning, it doesn't say that i need to work hard to make life easy for men who sleep around. that man is responsible for his own babies.

An orphan is someone whose parents die.

And no, I don’t have an obligation to make life easier for women who sleep around. Nor do I for men who sleep around. Most countries have child support laws anyway to take care of what you described above.

A single mother who fornicates and has a child out of wedlock made a sinful, wicked decision.

I find it difficult to take seriously any proposal (or proposer) that calls for "universal free" anything. Make the case that it's worth the higher taxes and higher prices to fund those things. It might well be, but we won't get to a serious discussion on the subject by being dishonest about who is going to be paying for the mandatory maternity leave and how it impacts the employment opportunities of women.

Sometimes I wonder if its ever possible for the social things the church should be doing to be merged with the view on sin. Why do we have to have these separate? why do we have to condemn with one hand and withhold with the other? or give with one and not speak to the sin?

I suggested to someone, only party serious, that perhaps abortion could be legal for the mother but treated like manslaughter for the father. We have the technology to prove paternity. For every abortion, a biological father would stand trial.

Yes it will cost more but this is a wealthy country and we can easily afford it. Many countries with far fewer resources do the same thing already. Pay for maternity leave like most countries do through business and payroll taxes so that the cost to employers is the same whether they hire men or women.

Judging from the comments here, people are immediately gravitating towards punishment for women rather than helping families and children. That is a strikingly un-Christian sentiment and the opposite of a just society. If you want to reduce the numbers of unwanted children then take steps to make motherhood more affordable in this country rather than the one-way ticket to poverty that it represents for so many.

The attitude here seems to be criminalization of pregnancy and forced childbirth followed by abandoning women and their children to a life of poverty. That is the opposite of Christian. Note that I didn't propose a single dime of welfare be passed directly to women. Only that we make it affordable for them to raise their children as productive members of society.

I find it hard to take people seriously who advocate that society take away reproductive choice from women but then turn around and say that society has no obligation for those same children once they are born.
