Instead of building gold plated offices for wealthy people at absurd rents, homes for needy people should have been built.

Re: Another business flees
Nike is permanently closing its beloved Portland factory store — one year after it shuttered the location because of theft problems.
The retail giant — like so many other major brands — has taken a hit to its bottom line due to a dangerous surge in petty theft shoplifting and organized retail crime.
In fact, The National Retail Federation (NRF) estimated in its annual security report that theft is costing the retail industry roughly $100 billion.
The Nike (NYSE: NKE) store, which opened in 1984 and quickly became a local institution, first closed in October 2022 with no official statement other than a message on the company's website saying “Closed for the next 7 days” — but the store never reopened.
At the time, local news station KGW-TV reported thieves were “stealing armloads of Nike merchandise and walking out the front door with no fear of being stopped.”
Here’s what prompted Nike’s decision.
Nike officials sent a letter to Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler in February, confirming they’d closed the factory store because of “deteriorating public safety conditions and rapid escalation in retail theft.”

Re: Another business flees
I firmly believe that many of the funds to help the homeless are being siphoned into the politicians’ and their cronies’ pockets; akin to the scheme run by corrupt governments in Africa in which charities’ donations of food, building materials, etc. were confiscated and sold on the black market.
My reason for believing this: $143 million homeless program got less than a thousand people housed. Now governor wants more

L.A. spends as much as $837,000 per homeless person to house them. There is a massive "poverty industry" where many people and businesses rely on all kinds of government & grand money to enrich themselves in the name of helping the homeless. But of course to keep that money flowing, they can't actually fix the homelessness problem. It should be obvious that over $800,000 per person is more than enough to put every homeless person in a house.

#1 - This isn't happening.mike wrote: ↑Wed Sep 27, 2023 7:36 am Target to close nine stores across four states because of theft and crime

#2 - It doesn't matter - Target is irrelevant anyway.
#3 - These stores aren't located in high-crime areas.
#4 - The problem is Target is not a good fit for these locations anyway. Good riddance.
#5 - Target has a lot of bigger problems than theft - blaming the closings on theft and crime is just white people putting their opportunistic spin on the closings.
#6 - The locals would never shop at Target anyway - they would shop at the corner bodega instead.

#3 could also be “These were located in areas that have always had high crime. It’s no big deal. The stores across town in an expensive ritzy area are still open.”
