Mark Gooch-Arrested for the murder of Sasha Krause

Things that are not part of politics happening presently and how we approach or address it as Anabaptists.

I think the term Josh may be looking for is “Moderate Conservative “. We would be positioned between Mid-Atlantic and BMA in the spectrum , IMHO.

Joining any uniformed service that carries weapons is most definitely a test of membership.

Keystone is fundamental-conservative. (Moderate conservatives would do things like still mandate cape dresses and organdy kapps, although compliance might be hit or miss.)

My distinction progressive (fundamental) conservative and moderate-conservatives is that the latter require cape dresses and straight cut suits for at least a segment of the church.

My brother and his wife are trying to join such a church. They have learned that she needs to wear a cape dress and kapp consistently for six months to be accepted as members, and that it would be helpful if he acquired a plain suit. It would also be helpful if they dressed their girls in little girls’ dresses. A member explained to them that whilst he doesn’t agree with this, it would just be a really good idea if they went along with it.

This can be difficult to explain to someone when they regularly see one of the girls’ schoolteachers at church in a skirt and blouse, and other members regularly wear veils now. Fortunately, they feel the Spirit working in their lives and feel a sense of submission to the written church standards and the expectations of the brethren. I went through the exact same process and I think it’s very important.

I was fixing to intervene when someone told her she can’t wear a shift even when she’s pregnant because she has to be consistent. Their membership booklet explicitly said shifts are okay. I am not sure how any person expects a woman who is 8 months along to wear a belted cape dress.

It ended up being a non issue since church hasn’t met in 2 months, and she just had her baby Saturday.

I interact regularly with people from six different Keystone congregations. It should be noted that Keystone is a fairly diverse group. It includes people who might fit in in a Pilgrim or Western Fellowship church, and people who might fit in in a Lancaster Conference or CMC church, sometimes in the same congregation.

I don't support or oppose it, but it gets done consistently by more conservative groups. it is not impossible obviously.

Congrats, Uncle Josh. Even though it does seem a bit off topic for the thread.

Personally, I believe our policies are more descriptive than prescriptive. That being said, the plain suit and cape dress are “endorsed” and those ordained are expected to do this.

My feeling about our conference is about the same as yours. We actually hold it together quite nicely. We have very warm relations with other plain groups, including BMA, Mid-Atlantic and the OORB. Our commonality is far greater than our differences.

The whole thread has wandered off topic. I'm debating whether I should post any updates or just see how far this thread can wander.
