There is some truth to this, especially for young men but for white people in general. We are generally not targeted as much. Now pan handling is a different story, some days it feels like I have ATM printed on my forehead.Judas Maccabeus wrote: ↑Wed Mar 04, 2026 10:04 amDepends on neighborhood. Mine is very safe.
Some are absolutely no go zones.
Interestingly enough, Hispanics and Asians appear to be the favorite target. Average white guys don’t carry money, and stealing a cell phone is asking for arrest. The cash apps are frequently secured by a second password.

I’ve experienced more direct crime in a small town than I ever experienced the six years I lived in Baltimore.Judas Maccabeus wrote: ↑Wed Mar 04, 2026 10:04 amDepends on neighborhood. Mine is very safe.

We did have a guy who had a cell phone stolen. Useless unless unlocked, and was bricked within the hour.Szdfan wrote: ↑Wed Mar 04, 2026 4:08 pmI’ve experienced more direct crime in a small town than I ever experienced the six years I lived in Baltimore.Judas Maccabeus wrote: ↑Wed Mar 04, 2026 10:04 amDepends on neighborhood. Even that is uncommon. Now go to Penn North or Pigtown and it is a completely different story.

I’m sorry to hear that happened. I remember years ago when I had a job up that way. DC wasn’t really safe but I could walk around Baltimore with no problem. I really enjoyed the restaurants near the harbor. Best crab cakes I ever had.Judas Maccabeus wrote: ↑Wed Mar 04, 2026 6:24 pmWe did have a guy who had a cell phone stolen. IF you mean Conally's, which was a green shack, yes, that is gone. But relax, most of Baltimore is safe. If you want good food, go to either Hampden or maybe Fell's point.JohnL wrote: ↑Wed Mar 04, 2026 7:23 pmI’m sorry to hear that happened. I remember years ago when I had a job up that way. Yep it was a green shack. Couldn’t remember the name of it. Thanks for the tips. Is Little Italy still there?Judas Maccabeus wrote: ↑Wed Mar 04, 2026 8:23 pmIF you mean Conally's, which was a green shack, yes, that is gone. But relax, most of Baltimore is safe. Yes. But it is a shell of its former self. All of the standards are still there, turning out the spaghetti as ever. Atman's is all that is left of Corned Beef Row. Much of the action has shifted to Harbor East. Fells Point and Federal Hill are still alive and well.JohnL wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2026 8:33 amYep it was a green shack. Couldn’t remember the name of it. If you went to Conneley's in the evening, you might have run into Baltimore's Mayor, William Donald Schaffer, and his friend Hilda Mae.

Hispanics, who work in a cash economy , tend to carry around plenty of cash. If they are undocumented, they won't go to the police. Strangely enough, the Chineese students/scholars i used to work with did as well, someone in their government tols them that American banks were unsafe. The Hong Kong and Taiwaneese students tried to tell them otherwise. Some of the robberies seemed to me to be panhandling, not robbery, and a cultural misunderstanding.barnhart wrote: ↑Wed Mar 04, 2026 3:07 pmThere is some truth to this, especially for young men but for white people in general. Sad but I guess change is inevitable. I don’t think I could have told the difference enough to recognize the mayor much less any mayor. Besides my attention is always on the food. Baltimore was a mecca for those of who appreciate good fresh seafood. I don’t know what kind of seasoning they used but it was always mixed with real butter and absolutely fantastic.Judas Maccabeus wrote: ↑Thu Mar 05, 2026 2:38 pmYes.
