Mennonite Measles in Texas

Things that are not part of politics happening presently and how we approach or address it as Anabaptists.

It looks like Mennonite Measles in Texas have traveled to Pennsylvania.

In a statement, the Department of Health said that an unvaccinated individual visiting Lancaster County following a trip to Texas was treated at WellSpan Ephrata on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, between 9:30 and 11:30 p.m. The Department of Health said there is the potential that others may have been exposed during that time.

I suppose you also remove the headlights from your car every morning since they are no longer needed. And throw out all your winter coats every spring because they are no longer needed as well.
If the DOT issued guidance that new cars should no longer have headlights, I would certainly be scratching my head and wondering what happened.
I'm expect your state DMV doesn't mandate headline use during the daytime. But when it is dark they do.

We are no longer in a pandemic. But a couple of years ago we were. And we might be again in the future. In the case of the UK they mostly don't want to keep spending hundreds of millions on universal vaccination for a pandemic that has passed. Since they have universal healthcare in the UK and vaccines are provided free by the government. They have to decide how to best use their limited funds. That doesn't mean vaccines didn't save millions of lives during the heart of the pandemic. Or wouldn't be needed again if the disease comes roaring back. Which it very easily could since immunity against this particular disease isn't permanent.

This stuff isn't complicated.

Yeah… I’m expecting we will eventually tie other states the same way.

We might have to change to “Mennonite Measles in all 50 States”, instead of having 50 different threads.

Well, I mean we have one called German measles, that would be a little amusing in a horrible sort of way.

In my state it's the law, rather than the DMV, that requires it.

which to me just proves the point of "if you are sick, stay home."

i agree. there was little flu during covid years. why? well, it is my opinion that people were staying home when sick instead of out spreading it around. and also, there was a lot more disinfecting going on. door handles were regularly wiped down, desks were wiped down, lots of hand sanitizer was being used. and good old soap and water.

if i am sick, and i go visit you, and you get sick because i spread it to you, and then you spread it to your kids, and your kids spread it to their grandma, and grandma spreads it to her sister who lives in the nursing home, and then everyone gets sick. and because they are elderly, they start dying.

but if i had stayed home because i was sick, then you wouldn't have gotten sick, and it would have stopped right there. now, that's not to say that someone else wouldn't have spread the illness, but it wouldn't be because of me.

I had a 100 degree fever today, so I stayed home. Might have to tomorrow too.

But is that how infectious disease works?

You can't eradicate flus or colds regardless of how much isolating, locking down, or vaccinating is done. The flu season is essentially stochastic. A sterilizing vaccine doesn't exist (if it did, flu would basically be nonexistent like how smallpox is now).

There may be negative health consequences to requiring people to isolate at home, excessively use hand sanitizer, not work in non-essential jobs, children not go to school, family unable to visit relatives in nursing homes and so forth. (I'm not convinced flu is transmitted via door handles or desks, and we now know COVID was not transmitted via such surfaces. But yes, I remember when we were all dutifully wiping down our mail.)

It really should be wiped down every knight, to prevent rust and a possible chain reaction.
