Roe found new constitutional rights that went way beyond historical interpretation, legislating from the bench. Just like recent decisions on guns.

If we don't want legislation from the bench, I think that applies to both.

I am grateful to the Lord that this has been decided.
Here is the Supreme Court pdf copy of the full decision in 19-1392 Dobbs v. Jackson.

In truth, has any group of Christians dedicated more effort to this, in every practical hands-on way, than Catholics?
Pro life, pro traditional family. (With the exceptions of those elected to high political office.)

There are more i can’t place at the moment, i expect there are more, still.

more, not Catholic alone:

SCOTUS is obligated to rule based on the Constitution, not popular opinion.
Still, without a case to rule on, they don’t rule. they don’t “rule out of nowhere.”

The Constitution explicitly mentions a right to bear arms and the country had plenty of historical precedent to exercise this right. If you read Thomas’s decision, he lays out exactly what this historical precedent is.

The Constitution doesn’t mention a right to abortion at all and there is no historical precedent for it either.

barnhart wrote: ↑Sat Jun 25, 2022 7:29 am Hi Franklin, I think you will find from the historical record that objection to infanticide and by extension abortion has its roots in the early church. Historian Tom Holland bears this out in his book "Dominion".

I don't think this value descends from a direct proof text in the New Testament, rather it is the application of the implications of Jesus. If the human form is important enough to contain God himself, it is sacred. This is also the root of other values that have formed the western world like charitable concern for the poor and associated economic "safety nets", radical leveling of social hierarchy (notable in the early church), the equalization of status between men and women, and a belief in the potential of every human.

I recommend Holland's book if you are interested as he carefully charts the rise of these ideas using secular sources.
This seems to be an argument from tradition rather from the text itself, which to me seems like an odd argument coming from a literalist “Sola Scriptura” perspective.

Franklin has a point. There’s no direct prohibition of abortion in the text.
 That probably depends on whether you consider abortion to be murder, or the shedding of blood or the taking of life.
i would strike out “probably” - and add, this reasoning applies to human law, too. human life at all stages.

When Texas recently implemented its ban, the amount of abortions dropped by 10% in the state. I’m seeing estimates of 13-14% drop nationwide post-Roe.
Did the amount increase in the surrounding states?

Have you ever been asked these kind of questions ? If so, how did you respond or if not how would you respond ?
If the aborted all end up in heaven then what's the big deal ? Would this not be better than them coming into this world and likely ending up in hell ?
or
If aborting a child is murder, God will forgive sins, so won't asking forgiveness after aborting still allow one to be saved ?
My own view on the overturn of Roe v. Wade will likely do very little to reduce abortions but rather get pro-abortion folks perhaps more organized to help fund people to go to States or Canada where they can have abortions. I don't see this being such a 'big victory' for anti-abortionists in how this practically will turn out. It will be interesting to see how our province, Ontario, responds to those wanting to get their abortion and coming to Ontario.

As for the above questions, as in all matters, Jesus judges on intent of our hearts.
He sees our manupulating and lying, our filthy rags.

pro life folks know this ruling is not an end-all. mostly, i think it’s a big surprise.

Illinois is counting on it, invested in it, nothing short of proud of it. Been looking forward to it for years.
Abortion, drugs, gambling are the 3 go-to promotions of DNC Chicago - for the entire state.
