The idea at that time may have been that we've had the war to end all wars (or was that WW1?) and everything was going to be peaceful and we weren't gonna study war no more. That didn't last very long of course.Soloist wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2026 9:40 amWife: it was called that back around World War II. It’s been the department of defense since 1949.Valerie wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2026 9:35 amIt was originally called that. From what I’ve heard Trump say is that under Biden America started to look very weak. The name change was to align with his “Peace by Strength “ and to convey that to those who see us as a weakened nation thereby taking advantage of that.

Just like we were going to eliminate Hamas, ISIS, and the Taliban "once and for all". You'd think they would make up a new slogan after so many failures.ohio jones wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2026 1:26 pm The idea at that time may have been that we've had the war to end all wars (or was that WW1?) and everything was going to be peaceful and we weren't gonna study war no more. Decades later, they are still with us.

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

I think somebody once taught that violence actually creates more violence. But as songwriter Seger writes and sings, when will we ever learn...when will we ever learn.

The name has not really changed, that would take an act of Congress. All that has happened is the secretary has issued a decree to call it the department of war. Since I don't work for them I can call it as I see fit.

Wow, every time I log into Mennonet there are like a thousand more comments in this thread. Yes, I completely agree with you; both governments have incentives to lie.Soloist wrote: ↑Thu Mar 19, 2026 10:17 pm
There was primarily two main things US appears to have not anticipated 1: the decentralized command structure with multiple company level military commands operating independently.
2: the support from China and the Russians.
I strongly suspect the tanker was actually hit by the Iranians, believe the F-35 was and strongly doubt the aircraft carrier was.
There is every incentive for the American government to downplay Iranian capabilities and every incentive for Iran to declare successful capabilities.
The simple fact is we cannot trust either government to give “factual” information on military operations or casualties.
Note, I didn’t say they will lie… there is a difference, I believe they will but that is a political view really.
I believe both China and Russia look at this maybe not by comparison but as America’s Ukraine.
And the intelligence provided by Chinese and Russian satellites has been crucial to Iran's war effort. Unfortunately, I don't see a quick resolution to this conflict, and with the recent Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, things seem only going to escalate.
Will there be a ground invasion? Who knows? But if there is, there would undoubtedly be a military draft

Younger right leaning folks are less convinced about the Iran war than older folks.

It reminds me of Herbert Hoover's adage, "Older men declare war. But it is youth that must fight and die."“You see a big age split on this,” Posobiec told The Washington Post, saying he had noticed the generational division among people contacting his show and at two recent Turning Point USA events at universities in Arizona and Virginia, at which students “were just not on board” with the conflict.
“Not in a sense that they’re anti-American military or pro-Iran or something, but just that they feel that if this war takes place, it’ll take precedence over their issues,” Posobiec said.
