I’m impressed with the skill set some have to turn virtually anything into a referendum on politics.
I guess the conclusion is Kerr County should have had zoning….

They should definitely learn from their mistakes and do better next time. All of these deaths were both predictable and preventable. And the same thing will predicably happen in the future if they don't change course.
Would you be similarly blasé about a plane crash that killed 170 people? And shrug off any NTSA investigation as to why the crash happened and how a similar disaster can be prevented in the future?

So, you'd agree the solution is government zoning restricting where buildings may be built, such as specifying setbacks, areas that aren't allowed at all for residential buildings, rules for buildings that may be used or not used as a residence/sleeping quarters, and so on?Ken wrote: ↑Sat Jul 12, 2025 11:07 amThey should definitely learn from their mistakes and do better next time. That is one approach. Other jurisdictions such as where I live address flood threats by building robust systems of dams, dikes and levees to prevent flooding in the first place.JohnH wrote: ↑Sat Jul 12, 2025 11:11 amSo, you'd agree the solution is government zoning restricting where buildings may be built, such as specifying setbacks, areas that aren't allowed at all for residential buildings, rules for buildings that may be used or not used as a residence/sleeping quarters, and so on?Ken wrote: ↑Sat Jul 12, 2025 11:07 amThey should definitely learn from their mistakes and do better next time. i’m perfectly comfortable with an older, wiser, more docile Trump.

Despite knowing very little about Texas, I highly doubt Texas doesn’t do those things.Ken wrote: ↑Sat Jul 12, 2025 4:18 pmThat is one approach. If you’d like to criticize Texas’s government because it’s Republican, may I suggest the Politics subforum?

The Corps of Engineers has done a lot of projects to protect larger cities in Texas. But very little upstream in the Edward’s Plateau because until recently it was very lightly populated and mostly by ranches. And that sort of thing would result in a tremendous amount of land takings which Texans tend to oppose. Out here in the far west most headwaters of most streams and rivers are in the mountains on Federal forest lands or BLM lands so there are no takings issues with putting in flood control dams and levees. Because of Texas’ unique political history (it was never a Federal territory, it went straight from independence to statehood) there are really no public lands at all in Texas aside from a couple of national parks and wildlife refuges.JohnH wrote: ↑Sat Jul 12, 2025 6:59 pmDespite knowing very little about Texas, I highly doubt Texas doesn’t do those things.Ken wrote: ↑Sat Jul 12, 2025 4:18 pmThat is one approach. That is the old political history. The response of the Texas GOP to enormous waves of development in flood zones over the past several decades is a different discussion we can have in a different thread if you like.

More flash flood warnings are alerting in the same areas. Please pray for the searchers and first responders. They’re exhausted and in harm’s way too.

Another 1,000 yr event like NC, or a turning to a new normal because of climate change?
