I don't think I'm wound up about it. I simply posted it to show what's happening in this gender confused world we're currently living in.Ken wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 7:47 pmThey are investigating a formal Title 9 complaint that was made to the Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights. Yes, some people are trying to employ the law (or create new laws ) in order to censor any LGBT content in public libraries.GaryK wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 7:54 pmI don't think I'm wound up about it. And some people oppose such censorship and are using using the law and other tools at their disposal to fight it.
So it goes.
Meanwhile in real life most school kids have Chromebooks and phones and rarely ever even visit school libraries except to get their Chromebooks repaired or borrow a loaner. Or to find a quiet place to study online. So this is basically a performative fight from the last century being played out by older people who have never heard of the Streisand Effect. It is a trivial exercise for most kids to pull up and read any banned book they want online.

If all this is just basically a performative fight from the last century by older people and school libraries are seldom used, it seems quite odd that the ACLU and the US Government have such a keen interest in it.

The DOJ is just responding to a complaint as they are required to do. The ACLU is a bunch of liberal old people battling against a bunch of conservative old people trying to censor books. None of it is about the kids.

Can you provide links proving your assertions? It was the superintendent that ordered the books removed. That doesn't sound like an old person fight.Ken wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 8:28 pmSchool libraries are public libraries paid for by tax dollars. Re: Gender confusion
Old as in not young and not digital natives like Millennials and Gen Y-ers. This superintendent's bio says he has 21 years of teaching and administrative experience plus an education degree, MA, and EdD which would make him about 50 if he went straight through without a break. He should know that kids these days mostly don't get their information from paper books anymore but are more likely to get it on places like Discourse. By taking books out of school libraries he is only going to accelerate that trend. If you don't want kids to get ALL their information online, don't force them to. The audience he is actually playing to is older conservative voters in his school district, not the kids.GaryK wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 8:37 pmCan you provide links proving your assertions? For some reason you seem to be downplaying the fact that this is an unprecedented Federal investigation. Why? Even NBC reported on this back in March. Your nothing to see here responses don't seem to be alignment with what is actually taking place.Ken wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 8:46 pmOld as in not young and not digital natives like Millennials and Gen Y-ers. Ken generally downplays anything related to the culture war going on the US. He either doesn't think it's a big deal, or doesn't think it's happening at all.GaryK wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 9:10 pmFor some reason you seem to be downplaying the fact that this is an unprecedented Federal investigation. What is unprecedented about it? How many Title 9 investigations do you think the Federal Government conducts in a given year?GaryK wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 9:10 pmFor some reason you seem to be downplaying the fact that this is an unprecedented Federal investigation. As of right now there are 1,939 open Title 9 investigations across the country. So this is just one of 1,939. How is that "unprecedented?"
You can look them all up here: https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ ... s/tix.html
And those are just the ones related to sexual discrimination which is the basis of this particular complaint. There are thousands more related to ethnicity/racial discrimination and disability discrimination. This is a VERY big country with a LOT of schools. There are about 100,000 k-12 public schools in the US and another 4,000 or so colleges and universities. So that is still a pretty small rate.
