FDA has apparently approved use of overfill in vaccine vials to get a 6 th dose out of a five dose vial. All vials have overfill, some are better at getting it all out than others. Could be almost a 20% extension of supply.
A great miracle happened here. The “oil” lasted longer than expected.

I wonder who collects the money for the 6th dose.Judas Maccabeus wrote:FDA has apparently approved use of overfill in vaccine vials to get a 6 th dose out of a five dose vial. All vials have overfill, some are better at getting it all out than others. Could be almost a 20% extension of supply.

Whoever is buying the vials. They don’t have to buy as many vials.ken_sylvania wrote:I wonder who collects the money for the 6th dose.Judas Maccabeus wrote:FDA has apparently approved use of overfill in vaccine vials to get a 6 th dose out of a five dose vial. And possibly there is saving to whoever is filling them. Filling the vials fuller may allow the production line to run more efficiently per dose.
And whoever is paying shipping from filling plant to distributing points. They have can ship more in the same amount of space and a little less weight.

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
It is interesting that, regionally, the Northeast is not anywhere near the level of deaths per day that it saw in the spring from the virus. The other three US census regions, however, are seeing their record highs (the Midwest seems to have peaked).

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
Actually, no one. Feds have already bought the vials. It is not like it is a "license" for X doses like some drugs, it just allows you to vaccinate more people. When it moves into the private sector, where a facility/visit charge is applied, likely a provider could collect more of those, but no, no one is being charged fro the drug.ken_sylvania wrote:I wonder who collects the money for the 6th dose.Judas Maccabeus wrote:FDA has apparently approved use of overfill in vaccine vials to get a 6 th dose out of a five dose vial. In NM we did this all the time for some drugs. I could give you a long spiel on the methodology. One company in particular prevented by selling you a "license" for X number of doses per vial, to prevent this and insured maximal profit. Billing for more than X doses constituted fraud. I encouraged the places I worked for to avoid dealing with them whenever possible. It just drove up costs. The way hospitals are regulated in Maryland, saving resources is a good thing for all. All hospitals here are nonprofit. Any profit gets placed back in the system for more resources, and to provide care for those without.

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
How are these vaccines going to be the savior, when viruses mutate? Isn’t that why we don’t have a wonderful flu vaccine, because it needs reformulated and re-administered every year?
Is the proposed “solution” to have a bee corona virus vaccine for everyone each year?

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
The part of the flu virus that the vaccine targets mutates rapidly. The “spike” protein appears not to mutate so quickly. As a matter of fact, Novavax (our local favorite) had a flu vaccine that targeted a part of the virus that does not appear to readily mutate finish phase 3 when this mess hit. Stay tuned for more announcements.RZehr wrote:How are these vaccines going to be the savior, when viruses mutate? The care home infections early on were deadly because of the at risk population. There has been more effort to isolate those facilities and the most vulnerable died the first time...mike wrote:It is interesting that, regionally, the Northeast is not anywhere near the level of deaths per day that it saw in the spring from the virus...,

Re: Coronavirus Outbreak
Well looks like there is a chance of normalcy returning someday. Hopefully all this “new normal” talk is not the case.
