Here is a local report that gives more context.
Smith was declared brain dead on February 19, when she was eight weeks pregnant. Newkirk said doctors told the family they were required to keep Smith on life support under the state's abortion law, House Bill 481, also known as the LIFE Act.

The law does not explicitly address situations involving brain death, but experts and some lawmakers said it has created confusion in medical settings.

“These are not small contradictions. These are life and death contradictions,” said State Sen. Nabilah Islam Parkes during a recent press conference.

In a May statement, the Georgia Attorney General’s Office clarified:

“There is nothing in the LIFE Act that requires medical professionals to keep a woman on life support after brain death,” said spokesperson Kara Murray. “Removing life support is not an action with the purpose to terminate a pregnancy.”

The Associated Press reported that Emory Healthcare, which runs the hospital, has not explained how doctors decided to keep Smith on life support except to say in a statement they considered “Georgia’s abortion laws and all other applicable laws.”

It appears that abortions have increased since the Supreme Court overturned Roe Vs.Wade. Maybe almost double.

My theory is that widespread availability of abortion pills per the FDA's decision in 2022 made abortion a lot more convenient and easy, so more people are getting those kind of abortions.

From what i’ve read, OTC ABORTION (POISON) PILLS quickly became the go-to method.
i’m pretty sure it’s well documented.

i seriously doubt overturning RvW had any impact on the poison pill phenom. the ultimate “convenience”.
100% no concern for the mothers (some children) suffering with the physical and emotional consequences. NONE.

One question i’ve had about this poison created to end human life is -
How often are they taken BEFORE conception is proven? “Just in case?”

My dread guess is, very often.
Often given to teens and children by abusers (to protect themselves).

A wretched ugly business.

God have mercy. If He possibly can.

From Ernie’s NPR post above:
NPR:
Four years ago, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Yet there are nearly twice as many abortions in the U.S. as before.
That's because abortion pills are now being prescribed online and mailed.

What school child today doesn’t know all about abortions - and these poison pills? :?:
Talk about a RACKET.

From what I have read, pills being mailed has increased abortions. The attorney general is trying to stop that from happening across state lines.

I think Americans overall are becoming less moral, and are having less guilt about abortions.

Americans are trending towards have dogs and other pets as children instead of offspring. I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said, "My child has four paws." Folks like this talk to their pets and refer to themselves as Dad and Mom.

And on the same vehicle a sticker that said, "Who rescued who?" They spend a lot on these pets, but they spend less than they would on a child.

I think overall people are getting more selfish all the time.

Here is an article we published recently about this. https://www.plainnews.org/wp-content/up ... er-2.1.pdf

Possibly the best thing to come out of the pandemic was increased interest in home schools and private schools.
This is my greatest hope for young people’s futures.

The existing pipeline, lib secular colleges spewing godless immorality+amorality (such as Ernie describes above) everywhere, is discouraging.

I agree availability can play a role but people are complex and their motivations are also complex. It would be interesting to see some research on how people feel about having abortions. I wouldn't be surprised to find quite a lot of guilt. I think desperation or the inability to imagine a good future with a child is more salient ever.

Americans are trending towards have dogs and other pets as children instead of offspring. I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said, "My child has four paws." Folks like this talk to their pets and refer to themselves as Dad and Mom.

I agree this is an important indicator of something, maybe misplaced affection
I think overall people are getting more selfish all the time. I'm not sure about this, people have always been selfish just in different ways. Maybe in the recent past people were more likely to believe personal fulfillment was found in having a nuclear family and now they are more likely to believe it is found escaping that, but either way goal is personal fulfillment.

What theories do you have about the increase?
We could also ask questions like these (which I'm intending to hint at theories...):
1. Under the current cultural/political climate (ie, that guy's culture revolution movement, 2016-present) - has the cost of living gone up or down? (excluding before times natural inflation %)
2. Under ... - has the cost of healthcare / childbirth gone up or down? (excluding before times natural inflation %)
3. Under ... - have the populations most willing/culturally inclined to having more children (I'm assuming this would be black/brown and/or religious) felt safe, secure etc?
4. Under ... - has the cost of education gone up or down? Has the opportunities for upward mobility or social mobility increased or decreased? (excluding before times natural inflation %)
5. Under ... - has the possibility of civil unrest, economic downturn, infrastructure crumbling (brick & mortal or system wide abstract), terrorism/hot war(s) gone up or down
6. Under... - has the will to deal with environmental issues or climate change increased or decreased? (yes, a majority of people still believe that's an issue and therefore their perception, even if it may be incorrect becomes a factor!)

Or... ?

It seems sometimes that the political operatives (and maybe some of their voters) most eager to end Roe vs Wade don't want to deal with those questions... or those questions get completely run-over by a bus that just wants to destroy, upend norms, pick fights with people inside and outside the country, macho pose, big-building project pose or anti-abortion-pose-for-votes or... the tried and true fixer of everything (that's sarcasm), tax cuts for the rich... Is that a climate that promotes increased family size for anyone but the devoutly religious? (a continually shrinking % of the population, btw...)

So we or we voters or a certain political party can do all kinds of legislative / judicial leaping about the altar calling on the Baal of quick fixes (rulings, outlawing this pill, that pill, that pathway across state lines, yada yada..) and none of its going to really dent the impact of those other issues coming from those questions and the 'climate'

I think Ernie's point about personal/individual selfishness is part of it, but I think these more broad collective questions play a role as well... ie the real or perceived 'climate' for having more children or children at all needs to be considered imo... (And I think the Church should consider these ?s as well, beyond just the do's/don'ts of individual personal sexual morality - which we do very well at - faithfully, vigorously and relentlessly...).
