Musk does not have to comply with the EU. He may have consequences if he does not, but he will not be jailed, just fined or blocked. Twitter is a US based company. He just has to comply with US law. He can choose to comply with other country's law, but that is a choice.
It doesn’t matter who the owner of the company in or where it is based. Twitter has to comply with EU law if it wants to operate in the EU. Just like it has to comply with Chinese law if it wants to operate in China.

Some of the staff let go at Twitter were involved in compliance with EU regulations and things like international ad sales. The EU has much stricter data privacy and hate speech regulations than the US. You can’t for example, promote the NAZI party in Germany. And some of the ad tracking and data mining that happens in the US is prohibited in the EU. I guess we will see if that has any effect in Twitter’s long-term operations.

I don’t think this is correct if he’s also operating the business in another country. I know there’s currently a case where he fired someone in another country via email. It’s illegal to do that in that country and so the person is still employed and it’s a big stink.

That is what I said. Not sure why you are correcting a correct statement.

He can choose not to comply and will face either a fine or they will block the app. I do not think they will do either. I think this is posturing. I don't see actual examples of noncompliance, but the fear of noncompliance with the EU. Most of this is driven by left media and extremists.

Well, since he has given 3 months "employment" as severance, I doubt that person is unemployed if they were an employee instead of a contracted worker. Some are making false claims to get attention.

The EU recently fined Google $4.1 BILLION for activities that were not illegal in the US. So they can and do regulate US tech companies and aren't afraid to do so.

Of course whether Twitter runs afoul of EU regulations and gets spanked for it is anyone's guess. The fact that Musk fired most of the staff that were involved in EU regulatory compliance might have made that more likely though.

But these things take a long time to work out. The EU investigation against Google started in 2015 and the final judgement and appeal didn't end until this past September.

I don’t think we’re talking about the same situation. In this case Elon sent out a mass email saying in essence “agree to these new terms and if you don’t we will consider you fired.” And then locked the credentials of those who didn’t “agree” to the new contract. And since this isn’t an allowed business method in the EU, an Irish court has ruled that the woman is still employed.

Apparently even Elon doesn't believe in unrestricted free speech. I'm also not sure how he has time to be running both SpaceX and Telsa when he is spending all his time involved in this sort of thing which seems like it should be way below his pay grade.

Yesterday this happened: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/ye ... -rcna59693
In an hourslong interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, the rapper Ye praised Hitler, made antisemitic jokes and talked about his recent meeting with former President Donald Trump.

The interview became one of the biggest stories on the internet Thursday, dominating discussions on social media for hours. “Kanye” became the top trending topic on Twitter and, according to Google Trends, searches for “Infowars” spiked during the interview.

During the livestreamed exchange, Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, repeatedly referred to antisemitic stereotypes, made antisemitic jokes and praised Hitler. NBC News previously reported that Ye had used antisemitic language in workplace settings and spoke positively about the Nazi dictator, resulting in at least one paid settlement.

“The Jewish media has made us feel like the Nazis and Hitler have never offered anything of value to the world,” Ye said at one point during the interview. “I see good things about Hitler, also.”

Clips of Ye’s statements quickly went viral on other social media platforms. On Twitter, videos of Ye praising Hitler quickly gained hundreds of thousands of views.

Later Thursday, Ye went further. He tweeted an image appearing to show a swastika inside a Star of David, which was then blocked by Twitter as a violation of its rules.
And today this happened: https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/02/tech/elo ... suspension
Kanye West’s Twitter account was suspended early Friday morning after Elon Musk said it violated the platform’s rules on inciting violence.

“I tried my best. Despite that, he again violated our rule against incitement to violence. Account will be suspended,” Musk tweeted in a reply.

CNN could not confirm which specific tweet prompted West’s suspension. However, earlier in the evening, West — who has legally changed his name to Ye — tweeted an altered image of the Star of David with a swastika inside.

Releasing the new Tesla semi truck into production, introducing this brain implantation device thingamajig, throwing Ye under the bus, all in a day's work. Just another day in the office.

The woman in question is the head of Twitter’s entire EU operations and she refuses to comply with anything Twitter’s executives tell her to do.

What do you think should be done in case of gross insubordination? Apparently a lot of people think they don’t need to listen to their boss or employer and can just do whatever they want.

(Unless they are a lowly cake decorator working for Kroger. Then they need to obey their boss, even if it violates their religious convictions, or else quit. - right, Ken?)

I wish I were half as effective at operating the businesses I am involved in as Elon Musk is!
