Do you think there was some era when politicians were trustworthy/honest? As a general rule they do not approach things like conservative Anabaptists do.Ernie wrote: ↑Tue Jun 24, 2025 6:26 amI was just thinking this yesterday about another scenario. It’s ALWAYS a devil of a deal in politics+war.R7ehr:
It’s a devil of a deal.
That’s why, “continuing prayers” .. is (in my mind) imperative.
Trump can be overly trusting and naive. He’s president. Not the worst.
There are always different realities going on at once.
Christians know, God’s will cannot be contained. Or presumed. No matter outward appearances to human reasoning.
continuing prayers.

i’m perfectly comfortable with an older, wiser, more docile Trump.

So…it doesn’t sound like the ceasefire is going particularly well and Trump is dropping the F-Bomb on TV about it.

Oleksandr Merezhko, the head of Ukraine's parliamentary foreign committee, told Newsweek on Tuesday he had "lost any sort of faith and belief" in Trump and his ability to secure a ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv.
Merezhko originally nominated Trump for the prize in November, but said he submitted his nomination withdrawal on Monday morning.

Re: Israel strikes Iran
Nominations for the Nobel Peace Price are not actually a meaningful thing like getting an Oscar nomination. Basically any national politician or university professor (and a long list of other qualified people) can make nominations of anyone they want. So every year they get hundreds of nominations and don't make the list of nominees public until 50 years later. That means the list of the current crop of hundreds of 2025 nominees will not be made public until the year 2075.Szdfan wrote: ↑Tue Jun 24, 2025 2:19 pm Rep Buddy Carter nominates Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize for the Iran-Israel ceasefire while these countries are still shooting missiles at each other.

Outside of a very few, Washington, Carter...maybe Lincoln and Adams...pretty much they get real.waffly.Ernie wrote: ↑Tue Jun 24, 2025 6:26 amI was just thinking this yesterday about another scenario. I’ll admit, I don’t know as much about Adams and Carter, but you have kind of a narrow view of the other two.joshuabgood wrote: ↑Tue Jun 24, 2025 5:14 pmOutside of a very few, Washington, Carter...maybe Lincoln and Adams...pretty much they get real.waffly.Ernie wrote: ↑Tue Jun 24, 2025 6:26 amI was just thinking this yesterday about another scenario. Re: Israel strikes Iran
So any predictions?
Does the cease fire hold? Is this the end of the war? How badly was Iran's ability to make nuclear weapons damaged? What will the diplomatic ramifications be?
Will this affect the way American Christians are perceived globally? Will this result in more politicization and patriotization of American Christianity?
Where is this this all going?

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

Re: Israel strikes Iran
I'm seeing news reports that early intelligence reports say that the US didn't obliterate Iran's nuclear capability but set it back about six months. There was damage from the bombs, but not to the degree originally assumed.
There was a lot of bravado. Trump declared a ceasefire, but it doesn't seem like Iran and Israel were on the same page. It does seem that the ceasefire is holding for now, but I'm not super convinced it's going to hold long-term. Trump was swearing in front of reporters because both countries were still shooting at each other after the ceasefire went into effect.
What happens next? I think a lot depends on what happens in Iran. Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, son of the deposed last shah, claimed in a press conference today that the government of the Islamic Republic is on the verge of collapse and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is about to flee the country. I have no idea. It's my sense that the Iranian government is not popular, but foreign attacks have a way of unifying a population.
I'm not sure Iran is motivated to negotiate or concede a lot right now.
I hope the Trump administration learns a bit more about humility. Trump's declarations that the US had obliterated Iran's nuclear capability or that a ceasefire was in place while both countries were still shooting missiles at each other were hubris. So was Vance's declaration that in the past, America had "dumb presidents" doesn't look good.
It won't help it. Honestly, I'm not sure how it could get worse. Will this affect the way American Christians are perceived globally? Will this result in more politicization and patriotization of American Christianity?
I think the smart money is to wait and see. None of this is simple or easy.Where is this this all going?
