Looks like many areas in the Southeast do not have flood insurance. So there should be plenty of people who will be glad for volunteers to rebuild their homes. https://www.politico.com/news/2024/10/0 ... e-00181952

A man from our church who works for CAM disaster relief is headed south this week for a likely extended time.

the devastation is just horrible.
Yes, it is indeed horrible. The degree of devastation and area of devastation is really hard to wrap one's mind around.
Anyone else here remember Agnes in 1972? This is much the same.

There will no doubt be endless opportunities for volunteering. But I suspect that for most people who lack insurance, the barrier will be materials not labor. The price of sheetrock, plywood, flooring, insulation, and everything else is about to go through the roof in North Carolina. Just like it does after every major hurricane.

I remember Agnes- had gone to college orientation and on the way rain and more rain and on the way home a few days later houses under water, farmland gone etc. It was unbelievable.
My husband remembers it and going to home to help clean out mud etc.

This is not the first major flood to hit Asheville, just as it is not the first to hit Harrisburg or Wilkes-Barre. This is something few consider when they build.

The victims of hurricane Helene will need all the help they can get from relief organizations.

As for the government:
“Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas says the agency tasked with helping communities recover from Hurricane Helene and other natural disasters does not have enough money to make it through the hurricane season.”

I know that congress will probably address this problem. However before we send billions to Ukraine to protect their border, and spend billions because this administration refuses to protect our own border, why not take care of the United Sates Citizens first.

I'm not a supporter of sending money to Ukraine. Neither am I in favor of US immigration policies of the last 100 years.

However, looking at it from a monetary standpoint, there is plenty of pork and excessive gov't spending that if eliminated, could cover both expenditures.
But I have yet to see a US federal government that cares about these things. You have a few folks like Jimmy Carter who spent his post-president years in a modest home.
But he could not strongly recommend everyone live like he did, or institute the same standard of living among government workers because...
1. most of the people who backed him lived luxuriously
2. he was not a communist
3. there is no way that government workers are going to take pay cuts to make the government more efficient, or kindly relinquish their jobs. The American dream is the opposite of doing with less in order to relieve suffering in the US or around the world.

Such is the problems with the kingdoms of this world, no matter what political ideology they ascribe to.
