In the Name of “Mission Work” book about CAM/Mast

Things that are not part of politics happening presently and how we approach or address it as Anabaptists.

See the link. It was 133k in 2020 the top position...And right at 100k the second.

If salaries for the top people are less than 6 figures for a full-time position, I doubt I'd call them "decent salaries."

Decent for me was greater then 60k. I know Mennonites have to keep up with their aggressive vacations… I thought the pay was lower. I’m not sure though that a 6 figure salary is that unreasonable in our economy now days. I last looked around when the thing broke out in the first place. I can’t even remember when it happened.

That’s a bit out of date (is David Troyer still the CEO?), and CAM’s board and executive team was reconstituted since the Mast debacle.

As som here may remember, I was very critical of CAM prior to that reorganisation. At this point I don’t see why a group like GRACE needs to come in and do much of anything.

Overall, if BMA people don’t like how CAM is run… perhaps they could donate to and focus on an institution they control. DNI seems like a good choice? I used to donate to some BMA missionaries who were affiliated with some BMA org and were in Thailand.

Overall I don’t think non church orgs are a good idea, but CAM exists, and I don’t think random unaccountable outside orgs have much to offer CAM. Who is GRACE accountable to? And how much profit are they making off of this proposed “investigation”?

For the sake of clarity, what is an "aggressive vacation"? Never heard that term before.

it was an excellent word choice in my batty brain. In my mind taking vacations multiple times throughout the year is kind of excessive and aggressive seem like a great word. I understand that you want to keep up with extended family and I suppose this is an argument for why churches should be planted only a few miles away  it just seems like there’s always a wedding to go to a funeral to visit and the next vacation to Israel. I’m probably just jealous but I actually hate traveling. As soon as they invent a teleporter I’ll like traveling again…. On second thought I don’t want to die and be remade over and over again.

Mennonites don’t really consider going to funerals and weddings “vacations”. Some do frequently go to Sarasota, but most travelling is for family purposes (weddings, funerals) or to attend church conferences, baptisms, and so on.

These are not necessarily expensive either. For a typical wedding we go to, the only expense is the car to drive there and back. You stay with a host family and there is plenty of food provided - more than you usually want, actually.

The wealthiest people I know tend never to go on vacations. Or when they do, not long ones. At least not until they retire. Always too busy running their businesses or practices or whatever. Sad that. My extended relatives with the most wealth seem to travel the least. Too many businesses to manage.

There is other costs associated with vacations such as no pay which generally isn’t a problem for the Mennonites I’m thinking of. As long as the harvest work gets done, no loss of income. Driving takes longer and it’s cheaper then flying with a family greater then 4, it’s the time away from work that takes that option off the table.

Generally speaking, plain people are not hourly wage earners, or at least aren’t by the time they have families.

Young people who work for a plain business expect to take lots of time off to attend weddings, church mission activities, and other activities that young people do. Employers complain about this, but in the flip side plain people tend to better employers in other areas, so they put up with it.
