So state and local governments should be primarily responsible for deciding gun policy?
What is the difference between a state and the federal government other then size?

Maybe if someone did a crime in one side of the country, that knowledge would be relevant to a state on the other side of the country, if that person relocated across the country and wanted to buy a gun. I guess all the states could share data. But if they did, thats close to federalization.
How does driving record sharing currently work?

To the Founders, this difference was huge and fundamental. That changed significantly after the Civil War. But originally, the Second Amendment was all about the difference between federal government and the states. The federal government must not have a standing army. States must be able to have well regulated militias. There's no mention of an individual right to self defense. States were allowed to regulate guns.

I was pointing out both are governing people and making rules. One on a larger scale with less representation compared to the state. You could just as easily argue the same for states and towns.

And after the Civil War, our own federal government acquired a great deal of power over the states that it did not have previously - a lot of that involved making sure that states and towns also follow the Bill of Rights. Did a slave have more representation when his state could enshrine slavery? Did individuals have more freedom when the state church was at the state level rather than the federal level?

your point being? Is this not simply a larger application of town authority to state authority to federal authority?

I'm mostly trying to describe the complicated history of how things have evolved. Individual freedom started out meaning things like the freedom of white individuals to own non-white individuals and the right of individual states to enshrine slavery. After the Civil War, individual rights had much more robust protections against state and local governments.

That has nothing to do with the similarity between the two though. On what ground can a state dictate something but not the federal government or vise versa? As far as it goes, is not the bold inherently a subjective "fact" that is debated and disagreed on?

Can you please tell me what part of that you think is hotly debated? Slavery was legal before the Civil War and illegal after it. Before the Civil War, the Federal government had no right to tell the states that slavery was not allowed. After the Civil War, it did.

If we are disagreeing about facts, which facts?

Because amendments to the constitution was passed about it. This made it federal.

Try hard not to offend. Try harder not to be offended.
I think I am funnier than I really am.
