Things that are not part of politics happening presently and how we approach or address it as Anabaptists.

Josh:
My plain brethren and cousins should really think about building bridges to law enforcement and leave their culture of omertà behind. It is not Christian and not taught in scripture.

Particularly when I hear them talk disparagingly about the poor relationships of other ethnic communities to the police.
Nothing compares to the “light of day.”
The internet is upsetting lots of apple carts.

temporal1,

With respect, the Internet is not helping promote righteousness or following Jesus in our plain communities.

Someone there knows something, hence the $50k reward. The reward money is coming from an outside source, not law enforcement or the church she was part of.
It’s no secret law enforcement is looking at the Mennonite community. I saw a letter from the Mennonite community basically stating that.

It does not follow that the reward indicates someone in the Mennonite community “knows something.”
Police will have many suspicions during the course of an investigation. Many will turn out to be false. Hopefully, one will turn out to be true. In order to pursue the truth, they have to investigate many things that will not be true. That's why gossiping about these possibilities is not helpful, it can really hurt those who are wrongly suspected even when the evidence clears them.

If there is wrongdoing by Mennonites, they should be held responsible just like anyone else. But suspicion is not wrongdoing.

Absolutely. And odds are, her calls are mostly with Mennonites. If anyone is reluctant to talk with police about these calls, that would be enough to raise suspicion. But it might not indicate guilt.

I have never been part of a plain Mennonite community. How openly would they share with the police?
I was thinking about data derived when her cellphone pings a tower. Does not give exact location, but good enough.

As to cooperation, it depends on group. Mine willingly turns over surveillance camera data to the police, and in at least one case called them and told them what was on it that they might be interested in.

In general, Lancaster Conference-heritage groups seem to have the best relationships with law enforcement (including the Keystone M.F. groups of Lancaster origin, such as J.M.'s church).

Something for the rest of us to consider and emulate. We could learn a lot about how this group has done things. Lancaster Conference seems to not have generated very many abuse scandals either.

i appreciate respect. :)
my thinking is only that the internet is a new tool, like the advent of the wheel.
it will be used for positives and negatives, Anabaptists are not exempt, even when great effort is made to resist it. we have wheels, we have lanterns/flashlights, we have the internet.
i don’t disagree with you. i hope this clarifies.

yes. my family of west coast hikers uses something or other they buy for their phones that can help them be located, even in remote areas without cellphone towers.
there are built-in trackers/pings, but i think more tech is available, if wanted.

In my past experiences, they go on lock down. Almost Waco, TX style.
Some of them are willing to talk to police if it’s to get an advantage against outsiders.

But most won’t even do that. They almost never will talk to the police if it’s against one of “their own”.
I can't disagree with you, Josh and Steve, hard enough on this. To suggest that people would not work with the police on this case is beyond absurd, and completely contrary to what the Sheriffs department has said about the Farmington community. They called the police, after all. They need the police. This is not some situation we read about where certain neighborhoods in large cities never call police, or cooperate with them because of a lack of trust, or out of interest in protecting the law breakers from the police.

No, we are not right wing fanatics who always side with the police, nor would I ever promote that. There are actually laws that are bad, and in those cases we ought to break those laws. The police job is to enforce laws using force. This keeps us from ever joining arms and marching lock step with the justice system. We appreciate them for the good they do, but we should always be arms length with them. They do tell lies, use force, and are obligated to follow the constitution, not Gods word. We shouldn't join them, but respect them and obey them, but not blindly obey, or blindly believe.

If a Mennonite played a sinister role in this case, that person is clearly not a child of God, but rather of Satan, and we should deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

It’s exactly the same thing. “Some neighborhoods in large cities” also will involve the police if it is to their own benefit.

Sure some will call the police. I'm saying that some won't.

There is a lack of willingness to cooperate with police in investigating one of your own.
