Aurien:
I can't speak with certainty for Dan Herr or any other of Harold Herr's (alleged) victims but I know that it takes quite a few victims a good while to come to terms with has happened to them and to find the courage to talk to anyone about it much less report it to the authorities. If I remember correctly there was a study done on the average age that victims disclose sexual abuse and it was most often when they were adults. I'm thinking the average age for disclosing was around 40 but I'd have to see if I could find that study again to be sure of that. According to the timeline in Trudy's January 12th post, a victim (Dan if I'm reading correctly) sent copies of a letter disclosing the abuse to both Children and Youth Services and the Ephrata State Police as well as to others. I don't know how old Dan was in 1990 or if the statute of limitations was up at that time but he most definitely tried to do something 30 years ago.

As to why it was never taken to the authorities by those who were made aware of the allegations, there could be a number of reasons. The most common ones seem to be that people either don't believe the allegations, or believe that something happened but think that the abuser is sorry and would never do anything like that again. People also want to protect their reputations, apparently not realizing that when the truth does come out that reputations will be more damaged than if they had been open and honest to begin with. Last but not least are those who don't report allegations because they too have the skeletons of sexual abuse in their closets.
i believe it does take time, and the internet has helped clarify this reality!
one of the most common+effective criticisms of victims is/was, “if this were true, he/she/they would have come forward earlier!” These accusations were often 100% sincere. More is now known about how abuse works. Even in courts, statutes of limitations did and do exist.

Now it’s known, esp with young victims, they do not always have the ability to articulate what happened, they may have little understanding of what happened, they often feel responsible!
they are often threatened by their abusers. they feel powerless. they fear their closest caretakers, even if abusers, may be threatened, thereby they fear their very existence, if they “rock the boat.” they may sincerely love their abusers. not all abuse is physically painful. victims may be very confused about what is love, and what is abuse.

All these things can be true even with vulnerable adults. Even with males.

Abuse is primarily about POWER, not sex.
This is also relatively new thinking. (i believe this revelation came about in the 1960-70’s.)

Truth is, we-all are in a MAJOR learning curve on these matters.
It’s been a process of decades, responding to abuse habits (probably of hundreds of years).

The work is not complete in any corner, secular or faith-based.
Nobody has it 100%.

It is a fact that the CA culture puts the men in leadership (puts them in power) over the weaker in their midst, the women and children. Does that culture give prideful twisted men who love power, an open avenue to abuse the weaker? As I said, I am not opposed to men in leadership, but do feel, that concept taken to the extreme can be a hotbed for abuse of women and children. And beings the women’s voices are suppressed, the perpetrators can get an easy pass.

FYI if you all haven't looked at my signature (or guessed from my writing), this is Aslanhasheard. I asked Robert if I could change my username so as to avoid any confusion with the hashtag that Trudy Metzger and others sometimes use. I changed my avatar as well, though in hindsight I probably should have left it the same for awhile until people got used to my new username.

I respect this. Thank you to Robert for accommodating this appropriate request.

I'm thankful to him as well. I had thought that I might have to create a different account if I wanted a different username, but Robert kindly changed it for me and also reminded me that it would be good to put something in my signature to let people know what my username was before.

I applaud Daniel Herr, Truth Seeker, Trudy, and many others of you out there who have courageously spoken up for the cause of innocent children and future generations from further sexual abuse.

Thanks joshuabgood for calling us to prayer, repentance, and humility. Today I am praying and writing with deep sorrow. May God forgive and help us all. I struggled to put words to my prayers this morning until I was helped by the prophet Daniel from the OT. Excerpts from his prayer in Daniel 9 follow:

"Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love ...
We have sinned and done wrong ... have been wicked ... have not listened ...
Lord, you are righteous, but this day we are covered with shame, all of us,
both near and far ... because of our unfaithfulness to you ...
We and ... our ancestors are covered with shame, Lord, because we have sinned against you ...

The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him ...
We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy.
Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act!"

Let us pray that leadership in Christian Aid Ministries (CAM), Life Literature (LL) and other mission organizations will have courage to face this monster of sexual abuse, along with the twin monster of failed organizational methods to deal with the problem. Methods which aid and abet the abusers. Methods of silence, shaming, and "just forgive and forget." Instead, we need to face the facts of how sexual abuse causes long-term consequences to both victims and abusers. We need restorative justice coupled with mercy and forgiveness.

Praying that CAM and LL see the urgency of getting help right away! In my opinion, they should ask an organization like GRACE to help them immediately. Some 8+ months of CAM leadership indecision is past, but let us not throw rocks at them. Let's pray that they and leaders in all Christian churches and missions would humbly ask for help to correct what needs correcting.

Let us each reflect soberly on our own failures and indecision in this area. With God's help, let's actively acknowledge, repent of, and clear ourselves and our organizations. Let's begin a better course for the future!

Jesus asks "Do you want to be made well?" We must humble ourselves, admit we are sick, and ask Him for help. It is high time for us to seek the Lord in this matter, and let Him heal us. It is God's will to redeem His creation. This includes all people of every people group. Includes you and me. We need His grace so desperately.

I am praying that God would help me do what I can from my spot. Please pray for me in this regard, and send me a personal message if you have particular ideas that I should consider in this matter. I need your help. We need each other.

I am praying for you, the reader of this post (whether you are a registered Mennonet user or a visitor). Praying that you will know Jesus as your personal Savior from your own sins; and that He will give you wisdom and courage to live to bless others. Especially in this area of protecting the innocent, and speaking truth, no matter what the personal cost.

May the Kingdom of Jesus, His righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit, radiate from our lives. He is so worthy of all praise and glory.

Blessings,
Dan

Dan, I see deep humility, as well as holy boldness in your post. Both are so essential to a mature christian. It is so easy for us to have one and fail miserably in the other. I agree with your post, and amen to the prayer of Daniel.

On behalf of my brother Daniel (who is always gracious and chooses his words with care), I want to thank everyone for their outpouring of support, compassion, and the honoring of his truth. I will relay your sentiments and recommend that it may be well worth his time to check out your postings for himself.

BTW: To bring clarity to a valid and frequently raised question--
When Daniel first came forward regarding his abuse in 1990, the statute of limitations had already expired.
Clearly this does not exonerate any adults who witnessed the abuse when it occurred!

Our culture seems to leave us very vulnerable to sociopaths or people with similar psychiatric problems, who then use our culture as a way to seek power and engage in exercising that power for immoral ends.

It's not a man/woman thing either. I am (unfortunately) aware of a woman who meets the above description, and I have heard stories from others of similar situations. Both men and women can and do abuse power, and both can be slick sociopaths.

If we had primarily women leaders, then we could expect that our abusive leaders would mostly be women as well. Since all of our leaders are men, all of our abusive leaders are men right now.

The problem we need to tackle is that we have a culture that protects and enables sociopaths to abuse.
