And how did his portfolio do 2017-2020?Szdfan wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2026 5:21 pmIf you’re going to defend Trump, you might at least stick to things that are true.
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/30/us/p ... -ios-shareSo to recap:President Trump reaped a stunning windfall in his first year back in the White House, including about $1.4 billion from his family’s cryptocurrency businesses, a new filing shows.
All told, the president pulled in at least $2.2 billion, a figure that includes other parts of his vast holdings, such as his real estate assets. That compares to a minimum of $622 million his enterprises pulled in for all of 2024, before he returned to the presidency.
One of his biggest hauls in 2025 came when an investment firm tied to the United Arab Emirates bought nearly half of the Trump family’s main crypto company, World Liberty Financial, a transaction that blurred the line between foreign policy and private enterprise.
1) In 2024, Trump brought in $622 million.
2) In 2025, after becoming president, Trump brought in $2.2 billion.
I wish I lost money like that.

Any amount he might have lost during his first term has been greatly eclipsed by the billions he’s making now. Whether or not his portfolio made or lost money during 2017-2020 is not really relevant now. Between 2024 and 2025, Trump’s reported income increased by 254%. Your claim that Trump has lost more money than he’s made during the presidency is no longer supported by the evidence.JohnH wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2026 5:29 pmAnd how did his portfolio do 2017-2020?Szdfan wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2026 5:21 pmIf you’re going to defend Trump, you might at least stick to things that are true.

At the very least, your claim is no longer true.

U.S. stocks (I picked S&P 500 so that the booming tech stocks would have less of an impact) have gone up about 250% from Jan. 2016 to the present. Are you alleging Trump's net worth has made outsized returns in excess of that? The Nasdaq went up about 400%.Szdfan wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2026 5:55 pm Any amount he might have lost during his first term has been greatly eclipsed by the billions he’s making now. What about other billionaires? Trump's increase (around 75%) is less than Jeff Bezos's increase (about 208%, despite having a divorce that cost him a significant amount of that). Elon Musk's is up about 6,700%.
So, basically... Trump's made a lot less money than other billionaires, and less than if he just parked all of his moeny in the stock market. Exactly what is the complaint here?

So if he would have placed his assets in a blind trust, as other presidents have done, he would have not only been better off financially, but would have made fewer enemies, avoided allegations of conflict of interest and insider trading, and provided fodder for fewer MN threads that try to shoehorn political content into the Current Events category.

That would be correct.ohio jones wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2026 6:50 pm So if he would have placed his assets in a blind trust, as other presidents have done, he would have not only been better off financially, but would have made fewer enemies, avoided allegations of conflict of interest and insider trading, and provided fodder for fewer MN threads that try to shoehorn political content into the Current Events category.
However, that does mean whatever is going on with Iran isn't motivated by some scheme to make more money. It's a pretty terrible way to do it.
(Apologies - I didn't check the category this was in and wouldn't have posted about this if I'd been more careful.)

War is fought for multiple reasons and this back and forth aspect is certainly making some people rich regardless of intention.JohnH wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2026 7:52 pmThat would be correct.ohio jones wrote: ↑Tue Jul 28, 2026 6:50 pm So if he would have placed his assets in a blind trust, as other presidents have done, he would have not only been better off financially, but would have made fewer enemies, avoided allegations of conflict of interest and insider trading, and provided fodder for fewer MN threads that try to shoehorn political content into the Current Events category.

And no, it wasn't an opinion piece...WSJ wrote:Iran’s unprovoked attack on U.S. troops, which took place late Tuesday Eastern time, shattered a brief ceasefire, after both sides paused strikes on Friday in order to give negotiators a chance to hammer out an arrangement for ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
The stuff that passes for journalism these days.

When the world is safe for democracy
When the nations are open for missionaries
When the flow of oil is free
When communists and socialists are removed from power
When terrorism is defeated
When the shipping lanes are open
When the bad regimes have been changed
When nuclear programs are eliminated
(All these are justifications I have heard from administrations/spokesmen in my life time)
