They're both devastating for the environment. Oil is worse right now, because it's gotten so much harder to extract, so more desperate, harmful techniques are required. Lithium will get the same way.Soloist wrote: ↑Sat Oct 02, 2021 4:01 pm That picture isn't very fair towards how Lithium is harvested.

This is the refining process of oilto extract lithium, miners start by drilling a hole in the salt flats and pumping salty, mineral-rich brine to the surface.
Then they leave it to evaporate for months at a time, first creating a mixture of manganese, potassium, borax and lithium salts which is then filtered and placed into another evaporation pool, and so on. After between 12 and 18 months, the mixture has been filtered enough that lithium carbonate – white gold – can be extracted.
It’s a relatively cheap and effective process, but it uses a lot of water – approximately 500,000 gallons per tonne of lithium.

As Ken explained, they are not as bad per capita as the US. Another point to consider is that a significant part of Chinese manufacturing is for the US market; they are polluting for us. I think a significant carbon dioxide pollution tax for imports might be a useful strategy.

Where did you pull your numbers, and look at the population of each country and total up the entire carbon footprint. Per Capita means nothing when you look at total contribution. What difference does it make per capita if you are concerned for he planet.

I find him to be quite balanced and honest. He used to be very supportive of renewables.

Here is another talk from Shallenberger. He states he grew up Mennonite. I was unaware until this video. He really does a good job laying out the benefits and drawbacks from each energy source in this.

I could not decide whether to post this here or in Menno Light section. Since this involved gas emission, I think it suits this thread more.
Camilla Parker Bowles can’t stop talking about an unexpected gas emission from US President Joe Biden at the global climate change conference.

But we all know that THIS time they got it right.

Apocalypse . . . now?
For the past two weeks in Glasgow, Scotland, world leaders have gathered at COP 26, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, to listen to the same message: Disaster is just around the corner.
“The world has to step up, and it has to step up now,” former President Barack Obama said. “When it comes to climate, time really is running out.”

But we all know that THIS time they got it right.

That gives us until 2030 — or 58 years after the warnings of 1972. Advocates for change believe if they just scream louder, or write more like the Book of Revelations, they’ll get the world to agree to a complete upheaval of modern life and trillions in spending. But after decades of alarmism, they sound like the boy who cried warming. People have tuned them out.
Climate change is real, but adapting to it, mitigating it with technology is the most realistic solution. Will China and India just give up on coal, gas and oil overnight? No, and neither will the United States. But emissions already are falling in Western countries, the world is innovating.
We predict things are going to get better. Ten years. Twenty years, tops. Maybe 30.
