I agree...alarm sells very, very well.

I am with Bootstrap on this one though...I am not in a panic, nor am I overly worried.

I think too little is known and and too many people have opinions not based on solid fact just yet.

Time will tell.

In the meantime, we will practice winter healthy...wash your hands often and keep yourself as healthy as possible.

but, we may be playing with fire in my home....my husband is not planning on shaving anytime soon. 8-)

Bootstrap wrote:It's weird that some people blame the outbreak of Corona on people who live in the United States when it started in China. I think some people have a list of enemies and simply assume they are responsible for anything bad. Neither Gates nor Trump nor Obama started this virus. A virus that started in China is not about American politics.

I do think presidential leadership is important in our response to the virus. Even with good leadership, Corona may well spread here, the most we can hope for is sensible precautions, executed well. It's too early to judge how well Trump is going to handle this.

I am not as panicked about this as some people. When we know more, I may be more panicked, but so far we really don't know how big a deal it is. It's a good idea to try to stop it from spreading. There are some things that government can do that make a big difference. But government has limited powers here.
I'm not panicked, but there are things in the response I find very concerning. A large concern is stockpiling of resources. From a macro level, like Taiwan not exporting masks, to a micro level, like floors and staff in our hospital system hoarding protective equipment and testing supplies, reactions based on fear often become self-fulfilling prophecies.

This tends to affect the ability to test, treat, and properly protect staff and the public from an infection spreading.

i recall people (in the U.S.) hoarding sugar and toilet paper, economic scares.
https://priceonomics.com/the-great-toil ... e-of-1973/

we were young in those days, we had no way to hoard anything, we did not go without (so to speak). my husband’s 90+ year old grandmother on a farm, had her pantry filled with 5# bags of sugar and TP. the quantity seemed outrageous to us. she was born in 1886, had experienced The Great Depression.

my young family is on the west coast. from what Robert has posted, i expect they will get the virus and survive. i probably won’t get it as soon, but, may not survive. i’m thinking about doing more to get my affairs in order. it’s been on my mind, i just need to act. my attorney is my age. hmm.
my father used to say, when you get older, get a younger attorney. older ones retire, and .. other things.

cancelling junk mail magazines is a good idea. i’ve cancelled many, more to go.
in my experience, after a person dies, junk mail can continue FOR YEARS. and years.
it’s painful, and a nuisance for survivors.

FWIW, I'm flying to Rome for a work trip soon. Italy is on yellow alert. So far, I'm not concerned, but I will bring alcohol wipes to wipe down the tray and handrests and such, and I will carry hand sanitizer.

my daughter just spent a few days in Vancouver, BC, for work training. she decided not to fly, the train was booked. she drove, 3 hours. we talked about the possibility of getting stuck at the border, maybe being quarantined, etc.

in the U.S., several military bases are planned for use as quarantine sites.
a necessity, something to avoid.

she went, no problems, was very sick with conventional flu after.

we are big on washing hands, etc.
COVID19 is air borne, so, masks. in my area, some clinic workers are wearing masks.
it’s being studied, how long it can live on surfaces.

My opinion:
- There is a great deal of hype to sell news.

- There is and will be a blame game to politicize the outbreak. This has taken the form of blaming the President for closing ports and travel early claiming he is being racist. Now his enemies say he isn’t doing enough. His enemies will never be happy with him.

- So far there are only approximately 60 confirmed cases in the USA. Looks as though closing ports early has helped us.

The old nuggets for cold and flu season apply:
- Another ditty to sing while washing is “Mary had a little lamb”: the full song to ensure proper length of time for hand washing.

- Mind nutrition: eat plenty of vitamin rich food, especially vitamin c. Avoid eating out if you can as restaurants don't always monitor employee health.

- Get plenty of sleep and rest.

- Trust in God.

and where you heard it?

Viruses don't usually mutate that quickly so that an immunity would not be able to be acquired at least for the season.

so, that has peaked my interest.
There is no known “season” for this disease since it’s only been been around a few months.

Colds do mutate pretty quickly and I certainly can get more than one cold per “season”.

while I do agree with you to an extent Josh, I think when one gets more than one cold a season it is from a different virus. That I would have to verify though.

I did read that there may be a season to this virus, but again, who really knows. It is all way too early to tell.

I just got back for a business trip to Poland through Germany. Airline screening in Europe is really ramping up, be ready for delays ay least. The airline (United) announced that people who have been to mainland China will not be allowed back into the US until they can prove 14 days of no symptoms outide from China. This makes sense - the virus will most likely arrive in North America via airline.

Some airline traffic to northern Italy has already been suspended, Switzerland has suspended gatherings of 1000 people ot more. more actions to come. I found that Europe is on higher alert than the US at this point, but virus clusters are already showing themselves in their midst, and nearby places like Iran and South Korea are already burgeoning hot spots.
