Thank you for this. It was interesting. We know a pastor that is a flat earther and we now have family that thinks the same. They also don't believe anything about the moon landings or Artemis. We believe too that the internet is probably a lot of the problem. Anabaptist people are getting involved with the likes of Candace and others who certainly make people question things.barnhart wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2026 12:38 pmI started a thread about it several years ago when it seemed on the rise. I haven't heard much out of it recently, the last public reference I saw was the stop the steal attorney Lin Wood professed belief in it.gracefortoday wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2026 11:23 am I'm trying to understand people who say it's fake. They are the same people who claim the earth is flat. I'd like to understand their arguments and where they're getting their facts/beliefs.

Re: Artemis II
If they’re getting into Candace, that might explain where all this sudden opposition to the military action in Iran is coming from. She’s one of the biggest voices on the right complaining about it.gracefortoday wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2026 4:14 pmThank you for this. It was interesting. (I actually agree with a lot of her ideas and what she says, but the overall trend is concerning.)

I have watched some of her videos as well. Could you help me with how you discern if what she's saying is true?JohnH wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2026 4:20 pm If they’re getting into Candace, that might explain where all this sudden opposition to the military action in Iran is coming from. I would advise only watching a series on a topic as opposed to “clips” or sensational gossip. For example, if you want to know what happened with Taylor Swift and Blake Lively, she’s a good investigative reporter on that.

Well now I noticed some common behaviors about the sensationalizing folks on the internet. It seems like all of them will say anything controversial as click bait to get extra large followings and even money. If you watch or read them long enough they switch to a different topic every few weeks or when the previous controversy plays out. They gotta keep those clicks coming. I think that’s why they dig up old conspiracies. When there isn’t a lot of news they have to keep folks reading or watching.gracefortoday wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2026 4:14 pm

Conspiracy theorizing is boring to me. I admit it. I think the biggest motivation is to keep people tuning in so the sponsors will keep writing those checks.

It's the largest media industry now - bigger than cable TV news and even than the major TV networks. Billions of dollars - and more significantly, political influence - is at stake. Millions of people are watching these podcasts and shows.JohnL wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2026 7:07 pmWell now I noticed some common behaviors about the sensationalizing folks on the internet. Whether left wing, right wing, centrist, or extremist, I would say most of them have very little value for the Christian. I personally do subscribe to Matt Taibbi and Michael Tracey's podcast as I feel it keeps me well informed without spending too much time on it and doesn't go into conspiracy theories.
Their current area of focus is how quickly wild conspiracy theories have taken over the right wing. It is interesting how there isn't too much reporting on the details of this.

It's a bit of an anachronism. The original moon landing denial is somewhat understandable—it had only been twelve years since Sputnik at that point so you can forgive people for wondering if the pace of innovation was a bit too unbelievably fast. But now things have been going to space pretty regularly for decades. You can watch the rockets go up. You can see the satellites going overhead and you regularly use them without even thinking about it. It's not that much of a leap to imagine sending a rocket a further on to the moon. I don't think it would occur to anyone to be an Artemis truther if the original moon landing denial wasnt already a thing.gracefortoday wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2026 11:23 am I'm trying to understand people who say it's fake. Since you said they're also flat-earthers... I'm still skeptical of how many flat-earthers actually "believe" it. The impression I get is that its the sort of thing people believe because it makes them unique. It's not about whether the earth is actually flat or not since you can pretty easily prove to yourself that the earth isn't flat if you really are skeptical about it.

Wife: I have learned not to get into an argument about proof with someone because they can use scientific sounding stuff to argue it, and to completely disprove it requires you to go up to space yourself. I don’t think it really matters to a point, except the conspiracies that go along with it, and the accusations of lying/evil intent.Pelerin wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2026 10:17 pmIt's a bit of an anachronism. Also, the Flatosphere is actually more of a snow globe with the current dogma. Satellites are not disbelieved. It’s just that I think they have some different rationale for how they work.

I mentioned once I could see a little bit of the curvature from the earth from an airplane.
The other person challenged me, "But only through the airplane windows... they make them convex [or whatever] so that when you look through them, it looks curved."

Here is a short video on BBC about the 40 minutes that the mission lost contact with Earth. "The first time in over 50 years that we have humans completely unreachable by anyone else on earth."
