Or maybe it's corruption and not following Jesus, while talk talk talking lots of christianize and generally acting more like americans than acting like Jesus. Most of american christianity isn't very attractive and dead set on staying nominal and deeply hypocritical (especially publicly and collectively) I don't really blame a lot of non-christians for choosing to stay un-converted, here or abroad. Maybe we should clean up our act more before we rush off to "go"? (And this is not primarily directed at the dwindling/almost dead end of mainline/liberal american christianity although they could certainly reform as well).

A Confessing Church would acknowledge the inescapable realities of sin and injustice in every human institution, including every political party. It would wholeheartedly reject any suggestion that one party or movement is the party of God. Paul D Miller

In my view, you’re making this ‘way too complicated. Jesus’s instructions were direct and succinct. Enough.Jazman wrote: ↑Thu Oct 15, 2026 8:37 pmOr maybe it's corruption and not following Jesus, while talk talk talking lots of christianize and generally acting more like americans than acting like Jesus. He was talking to His, not expanding on possible failures, unbelievers, scoundrels, or others. He trusts the Holy Spirit to determine outcomes. As with mustard seeds.
My words were deliberately imprecise and broad, hoping to nudge toward Jesus’ instructions,
‘cause that’s where the value is. And always is.

i’m perfectly comfortable with an older, wiser, more docile Trump.

There are 26 Muslims running for office this election.
Tulsi Gabbard just gave a speech at the Texas Youth Summit.
She spoke of many concerns one of which is the threat of Islam to our country. She served our country in Iraq every day knowing it could be her last day on earth.
Anyway-
She said the biggest near and long-term threat to our freedom in the west is the rapid spread of Islamism.
She explained their political ideology and that their goal is to seek power and to fund Jihad terrorist, and she named mini terrorist groups, so I never even heard of. They will silence any opposition to them.
If you want to hear what she had to say it starts at 19:19?minutes into her speech: (It’s appropriate that she worn, and in a state, especially where mosques are being built rapidly)

Do you think the "Christian" nationalists in charge are better, ie Pete Hegseth?Valerie wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2026 2:10 am There are 26 Muslims running for office this election.

When one examine the scope of Anabaptist experience, that picture isn't very clear, frankly.

Time will tell, but there's a lot more political opposition to someone like Hegseth, which leads me to have basically no concern at all that I am going to live in some kind of Reformed/Calvinist police state.joshuabgood wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2026 7:54 am Do you think the "Christian" nationalists in charge are better, ie Pete Hegseth?

Whereas the possibility of being in a society dominated by extreme sects of Islam is reality for people in many parts of the UK now. Interestingly, actual theocratic Islamic countries don't even tolerate that level of things. So it's really not about concern about Islam, but about radical Islam and about taking things to extremes that most Muslims wouldn't even want, and that stable governments don't do.
In short, it's not a bad thing Valerie doesn't want cities in America to become ruled by the Taliban. You don't want them ruled by Pete Hegseth. There's nothing wrong with being concerned about both things. At issue here is the level of opposition to the former is quite low.
For some positive things about a city government that's entirely Muslim, and that I support and would appreciate living under, is that they no longer tolerate Pride flags flying at city hall or give permits to organise Pride rallies and marches.

Do you have evidence for this, or just a feeling based on news you have seen?
You may be right that there is more overt political opposition at the moment, but it seems highly unlikely to me that Americans as a whole would be any more tolerant of radical Islam than radical Christian nationalism.

Hegseth has an entire political party arrayed against him and a vast institutional apparatus consisting of both the left, centrists, and the GOP establishment who don't like him.Wesleyb wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2026 9:38 amDo you have evidence for this, or just a feeling based on news you have seen?

For a contrast, we can look at what's happened in the UK. It is simply a bunch of things that are not good for any society and that I don't want happening here. Entrenched Islam in UK has been a disaster and a failure, although I think that's mostly because of the cultures represented, not Islam itself.
And that's really the bigger problem beyond Islam is when an entire city government becomes dominated by a single ethno-religious group that is from a cultural background that has cultural values of nepotism and favouritism for one's own family and extended clan. Those are not American values. They are cultural values in some, but not all, majority-Islamic countries. I think claiming the problem is "Islam" is actually a distraction, but it's probably more palatable for those on the right wing who want to complain about such things than addressing the problems head-on.
(For an example of Islamic countries very different from that, look at Malaysia and Indonesia, which manage to be pluralistic despite Muslim majorities, don't have endless problems with extremist terrorism, and have functional economies that don't generate large amounts of refugees or economic migrants trying to move elsewhere.)

Not sure Indonesia is the best example here, with 5.3 million migrant workers in other countries (including 1.8 million in Malaysia, one of the top 20 country-to-country migration corridors).JohnH wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2026 10:28 am (For an example of Islamic countries very different from that, look at Malaysia and Indonesia, which manage to be pluralistic despite Muslim majorities, don't have endless problems with extremist terrorism, and have functional economies that don't generate large amounts of refugees or economic migrants trying to move elsewhere.)

After a decade of Muslim mayors and city council, how is Hamtramck doing? Any signs of religious intolerance? Any churches shut down? Any no go zones where non- Muslims are excluded? Sharia law? Honor killings? Has any part of the city charter been changed to favor the practice of Islam? These were all concerns I have heard to support ending Muslim immigration.

This feels odd... what year are we in? 2002, 3, 4? When was the last major Islamic terror attack in the US or western Europe? Why is this being drummed up now when there's other larger not-Islamic-terror things going on recently... (unless there's a sense that the war actions of Israel & the Maga US gov towards Islamic entities will produce backlash/blowback... and to note: some in the Maga movement/highest echelons Wanted Israel and the US gov to start/do those things against those Islamic countries...)Valerie wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2026 2:10 am Anyway-
