Think it’s hot now? The next five years will smash records, UN says

WASHINGTON (AP) — In the next five years, the Earth is overwhelmingly likely to surge again and again past the international climate threshold set as safe and shatter its hottest-year record along the way, according to new United Nations climate projections.

The World Meteorological Organization also forecasts an overheating Arctic that warms nearly 3 degrees Fahrenheit (1.66 degrees Celsius) between now and 2030 and a dangerous drought with potential wildfires for the Amazon, a crucial part of Earth’s natural defenses to lessen human-caused climate change. A hotter globe from the burning of coal, oil and gas means more extreme weather including floods, droughts and heat waves, scientists said.

The projections by the U.N. climate agency and the United Kingdom’s Meteorological Office said there’s a 75% chance that the average global temperature between 2026 and 2030 will exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) since pre-industrial times. That threshold is the agreed-upon limit of warming — averaged over 20 years — set in 2015 by the Paris climate agreement.

A U.N. science report a few years later detailed how exceeding that 1.5 mark means more likely death, danger and species loss. Even though it’s only a few tenths of a degree, some of the planet’s ecosystems, such as coral and glaciers, can’t handle the strain.

Ah, the same nonsense we’ve been hearing for years that never actually ends up happening.

An interesting analogy:
This has been one of the most succulent ironies I've seen in a long time. The administration that denies climate change has created a scale model of how it happens at their door because of their ignorant decisions and impositive orders.

They have a miniature anthropocene right there.

Disturbed by what he deemed a "filthy" aesthetic, Trump bypassed seasoned engineers and civil specialists, awarding a $14.2 million no-bid contract to a company that had previously coated a swimming pool at one of his private golf clubs.

The mandate was simple, superficial, and unburdened by expertise: paint the bottom of the historic, 2,000-foot-long basin a specific, patriotic hue dubbed "American flag blue".

What followed is a masterclass in the unintended consequences of weaponized ignorance. By applying a dark, industrial epoxy coating across an expanse larger than six soccer fields, the builders unwittingly created a perfect, enclosed macro-experiment in anthropogenic climate change.

And I want to state the following: executive orders cannot override the basic laws of physics.
When solar radiation hits a body of water, the color of the basin’s floor dictates how that energy is managed:

The light, untreated stone bottom reflected a significant portion of solar energy back out of the shallow water, keeping temperatures relatively stable.

The dark "American flag blue" epoxy acted as a giant solar heat sink. Dark colors absorb a drastically higher percentage of the light spectrum, transferring that energy directly into the stagnant water as heat.

As a heatwave rolled through Washington D.C., the water temperature spiked. In biology, an increase in temperature accelerates metabolic rates. Combined with the untreated, nutrient-rich water pumped from the Tidal Basin, Trump’s dark blue floor transformed the national monument into a high-capacity biological incubator. Within days of completion, the pristine "azure expanse" underwent an ecological shift, blooming into a chartreuse, mossy green soup.

The delicious irony of the chartreuse reflecting pool is that it acts as a literal mirror to the administration's broader environmental philosophy. On a global scale, the burning of fossil fuels, the promotion of carboelectric plants, and the deliberate dismantling of pollution regulations trap heat within our atmosphere. When scientists warn that a warmer planet alters ecosystems and triggers catastrophic, compounding consequences, the response from this political faction is denial, regulatory rollbacks, and the purging of expert agencies.

Yet, right at their doorstep, the exact same feedback loop played out in miniature. The administration tried to conquer nature with a superficial aesthetic fix, ignored the thermodynamic warnings of pool specialists, and accidentally engineered a swamp.

And having workers dumping peroxide into the pool as a temporary solution to the problem reminds me of that Futurama episode in which they dropped giant ice cubes into the ocean to cool it while raising its level.

But the new green color of the pool is just a visual punchline easier to notice than everything else they could have expected.

To my understanding, every man made pool, fountain, etc, requires regular chemical balance, as well as cleaning and maintenance.
In my area, a pool is a real estate detriment, unlike in southern states, where, i’ve read, pools are valuable selling features.

We lived next door to a family with a gorgeous inground pool, it was so dark, nearly black, a very contemporary style.
Crystal clear water, i’m sure with chemicals and regular cleaning.

What’s interesting about this is:

- The reflecting pool’s basin’s surface used to be black asphalt, which in theory absorbs more heat than blue.
- The actual mandate was to conduct repairs that have been planned for years.
- The algae blooms have been an ongoing problem for decades, and haven’t been mitigated yet.

A perfect analogy for “climate change” alarmists: nothing they claim is actually based on facts, and is almost entirely political. I certainly never heard about all the mismanagement of the reflecting pool under the Obama administration when it had the same problems it has now.

Nice summary.
Just above, i mentioned my neighbors’ gorgeous inground swimming pool, black, and beautiful.
Crystal clear water. The depth varied, it had a shallow and a deep end.

The D.C. reflecting pool has problems that can be resolved. It’s just science and engineering. It’s huge, so, $$$$.
A decision could be made to abandon the water, create another type of space.

No matter, it’s not deserving of all the current [political] drama. :blah:

Every admin needs to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time.
Certain responsibilities of city maintenance and cleanup, security, etc., should be basic and nonpartisan.

Frankly, it shouldn’t require the White House to do, or even oversee, basic city cleanup.
Reports are, there’s been years* of neglect. Shame shame.

*years of neglect suggests CAREER politician failure, not partisan failure.

Meanwhile over in the UK, governments are forcing people to remove their air conditioners during what they call a "heat wave" (temperatures in the 90s, which we here in the Midwest consider a "normal summer"):

https://www.gbnews.com/news/air-conditi ... c-net-zero
Britons have been ordered to remove air conditioning from their homes - despite the country baking in up to 40C heat this week - under a fresh Net Zero crackdown.

Planning officials at councils have told residents to take down their cooling units over concerns about carbon dioxide emissions.

They say AC, despite the heat, should serve only as a "last resort".

The crackdown comes from building regulations which demand "active cooling" is used only after all "passive cooling" methods, like opening windows or running fans, have been exhausted.
Imagine someone going door to door when it's in the mid 90s and commanding you to turn off your AC out of some misguided notion that it's saving the planet. (Isn't electricity a renewable resource these days, too, with the UK getting over half of its electric from renewables?)
One Londoner received orders to "permanently remove" two cooling units from the rear of their property, The Telegraph revealed.

Camden Council's planning inspectors determined there was "no justification" for the equipment, ruling it breached the authority's "cooling hierarchy" policy.

During an appeal, the homeowner was advised to open windows and balcony doors in their first-floor flat to achieve ventilation "by natural means".

When the resident raised security concerns in the crime-addled capital, inspectors dismissed these, arguing the risk was not "as great as those associated with ground floor windows" and suggesting windows could remain closed overnight.
Another example of the elites lording it over the commoners. Somehow, I suspect the elites' homes are nicely cooled at night and have some magical "exception" to this policy. The common man, however, gets to have an extra 200 deaths treated as normal every summer over something that in America I can fix with $10 spent at a yard sale on a used window aircon.
Estimates indicate roughly three per cent of British homes have air conditioning, compared with 90 per cent in America.
This is what the reality of the "climate change" cheerleaders actually want.

EU HQ also shut down AC for lower staffers. But the commissioners were allowed to have it on....

This summer has been brutal here in the Netherlands. This Friday parts of the country will see the fifth heat wave of the year. It's been worse in the UK and France.
