My encouragement to live debt free was from David Bohlander at an AF meeting years ago when he was River Brethren.temporal1 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 05, 2025 10:17 pmi would alter to suggest save, and/or live, debt-free, esp to shun unsecured debt, which (i believe) creates today’s version of indentured servants. It’s voluntary. With loads of encouragement.JH:
I don't recommend Christians get into stocks like this but I think overall it's not a bad thing for society to encourage teaching children to save instead of consume.![]()

i was young, but i experienced the world before credit cards+unsecured debt, when every loan had to be approved with tangible proof of ability to repay according to written terms, typically, a job was a primary requirement.Southerner wrote: ↑Fri Dec 05, 2025 10:36 pmMy encouragement to live debt free was from David Bohlander at an AF meeting years ago when he was River Brethren.temporal1 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 05, 2025 10:17 pmi would alter to suggest save, and/or live, debt-free, esp to shun unsecured debt, which (i believe) creates today’s version of indentured servants. Decades later, my 2 year old granddaughter received her first offer for an unsecured credit card.
Unsecured credit cards are offered, if not assigned to young people who have never had a job in their lives.
It’s extremely profitable. Enough that bad debts are not a reason to stop the practice.
We tried to convey the message to our children, “a monthly car payment is NOT a requirement of living”.
At the moment, i think their cars are paid.
(of course, those are secured loans.) still, the point being. unsecured debt is even worse.
Do you have anything written or spoken from David Bohlander you could share here?
i think it’s really important. i do believe it’s a form of indentured servitude that’s ignored.

i’m perfectly comfortable with an older, wiser, more docile Trump.

When i learned my dear fil’s life story, it made a profound impact on “what can we leave our children”?
He was born in 1908, his mother died when he was 5, he and siblings went to the nearby orphanage.
He, and they, turned out to be contributing members of society, they all married and had families, he went to college and became a ceramics engineer, his life’s work was working on the coatings of the well known blue silos that dot countrysides everywhere.
He was a quiet, devoted Christian. This defined his life.
It was his wish that this would define his life, come what may. He told us, in so many words. No guessing.
Priorities!
He told us he had 2 memories of his mother. She only had 5 brief years with him!
He remembered her long hair, and she took them to Sunday School.
What do we leave our children that will provide for them for life, whether we’re present or not?!
i pray to be as wise and successful. we have no idea what our children will face in their lifetimes.
i pray for the Holy Spirit to guide and protect. Every word, every choice. He is able.
