Oh. Surprise. Turns out marijuana can have bad health effects.
Marijuana
Re: Marijuana
Yes, this has been common knowledge for many years, especially if it is smoked. I am not saying that controlled doctor prescribed cannabis doesn't have a medical value though. We have friends who have a severely disabled daughter and cannabis use, under the guidance of their doctor, has really helped with this daughter's seizures. But I see absolutely no use for Marijuana for recreational use at any age.Ernie wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 7:31 am https://www.politico.com/news/2023/02/0 ... s-00081178

Re: Marijuana
Every wing of the political spectrum has its own blind spots when it comes to heath, medicine, and science.
In some conservative circles there was a lot of misinformation and unscientific nonsense promoted about COVID and COVID cures.
In some liberal circles there is a tremendous amount of misinformation and unscientific nonsense about Marijuana. "Medical" Marijuana and now extracts like CBD oil are touted as miracle cures for virtually every conceivable ailment. Some of the nonsense is so thick you can cut it with a fork. I'm not sure why that is. Probably because the Marijuana legalization crowd were eager to tout any possible benefit in their campaigns for legalization. And also there are a LOT of people with various chronic conditions and pains who are seeking relief that traditional medicine isn't really providing.
I'm not saying there are NO medical benefits to marijuana. It does seem to help those with chronic pain and nausea from chemo. But the wide range of things it is supposed to treat is pretty unbelievable. A lot of it was nonsense put forward by potheads who just wanted to get recreational pot in states where it wasn't legal. The FDA should actually be funding and doing a lot more legitimate clinical studies on medical marijuana which isn't getting done now because it isn't a patented drug that big pharma companies are willing to spend a lot of time and money testing.
But the idea that sucking smoke into your lungs (any kind of smoke) isn't harmful was always nonsense. ANY particulate matter that you suck into your lungs is ultimately going to be harmful, especially if you do it all the time. And anyone who has lived around a hard-core pot head knows that the drug eventually numbs your motivation and sharpness. Same as for chronic alcoholics.

There are people I know in conservative Mennonite churches that have bought into the “magic” of CBD. (They also happen to be committed anti-vaxxers.) I’m sure I’ve seen CBD products in bulk food stores as well.Ken wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 11:37 am Every wing of the political spectrum has its own blind spots when it comes to heath, medicine, and science.

…
Anti-vax was a left-wing thing until late 2020/early 2021—if you’d have asked me to describe a typical anti-vaxxer, I’d have described a young white mom from Portland. Then suddenly anti-vax became very uncool very fast on the left, but it turned out there were a lot of people on the right that had also bought in to “alternative health” and became the new face of anti-vax.
I was sitting here chuckling to myself at the thought of another flip where conservative Anabaptists become ardent proponents of marijuana while liberals discourage it. But that actually has happened already—except it wasn’t marijuana, it was tobacco. American liberals have been on an anti-tobacco campaign for the last fifty years, while some Anabaptists continued to grow and smoke it (especially the Amish).

That is true. Out here on the west coast prior to the COVID epidemic there were two different pockets of anti-vaxers.Pelerin wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 2:39 pmThere are people I know in conservative Mennonite churches that have bought into the “magic” of CBD. One pocket was conservative evangelical homeschool and private schools. We had a measles outbreak here in Vancouver a few years ago that was traced back to a small evangelical private school that was heavily attended by Russian immigrants who largely opposed vaccination. And the outbreak was caused by a family returning from a trip to Russia.
And the other pocket was ultra-liberal communities. The other schools with the lowest vax rates were places like alternative Montessori schools in very liberal neighborhoods. Who are also the same folks completely into CBD, healing crystals, yoga, herbal remedies, homeopathy, and all kinds of other stuff.

Re: Marijuana
I get where y'all are coming from, there's definitely been a ton of hype and misinformation on both sides of the aisle when it comes to cannabis and CBD. But not everything in this space is snake oil. Some clinics in the UK, like the ones you'll find in this Integro review, are actually doing solid work, real patient care, personalized treatment plans, proper THC:CBD ratios, not just vibes and marketing fluff.
I've seen firsthand how this kind of approach helped a family member manage chronic pain without relying solely on heavy-duty meds. It's not magic. It's just targeted, supervised use.

Re: Marijuana
Just about any medication has side effects, and medication should not be used recreationally. The stronger the medication, the stronger the side effects tend to be. You want evidence-based everything when you are dealing with strong medicine.Arnold33_09 wrote: ↑Fri May 09, 2025 4:07 pmI get where y'all are coming from, there's definitely been a ton of hype and misinformation on both sides of the aisle when it comes to cannabis and CBD. And FWIW, marijuana in the 2020s is not the same animal as marijuana in the 1970s. The THC levels are MUCH higher.

1. Are we discussing the topic? Good.
2. Are we going around and around in a fight? Let's stop doing that.
3. Is there some serious wrongdoing or relational injury? Let's address that, probably not in public and certainly not for show.

Growing up on the west coast I have had plenty of experience with deadened out potheads over the years. Socially, in school, and on the job. It robs people of their vitality and initiative even without getting into the actual physical health effects of long-term chronic smoke inhalation.Thomas_muntzer wrote: ↑Fri May 09, 2025 4:19 pmYes and the younger someone start to consume worst are the health effects specially for memory and learning capacityErnie wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 7:31 am https://www.politico.com/news/2023/02/0 ... s-00081178

I basically have zero patience with folks who want to claim that recreational pot is any different from any other recreational drug or vice. I also have little patience with people who make unsubstantiated medical claims about cannabis or CBD. There are some limited areas of medicine such as epilepsy treatment and use for nausea in the case of chemo and other strong drugs where it has documented benefits. Possibly also as a non-opioid pain therapy in limited instances. Beyond that the evidence is mixed at best and we simply don't have legitimate scientific support for many of the magical claims made about CBD or cannabis generally.
