Recommend Books for a new church plant library.

Post by MarkKraus »

We have a lot of seekers and ones we have met going out into the highways and hedges here in Hickory NC. We would like to have a library in our new meeting house. I would like some input, what are some of your favorite books that could be a blessing to new believers?
Some of the titles we have ordered are Jesus really said that? Only a servant, The kingdom that turned the world upside down. In the flame of Russias revolution. What Jesus refused to do. maybe some child training and forgiveness books you could recommend.

Those are great books! A book I really like is called "The Bait of Satan", which is about the problem of becoming offended. (It is related to the theme of forgiveness too.) This can be a real challenge for new believers to learn (myself included).

Any general pointers regarding the past life experiences of these people? Cultural background?

Maybe some basic teaching on marriage, as in "Why get the paper?" Sorry, don't have any titles to suggest, but I would think that some basic "Who we are" books would be a fitting choice.

Wife: A Change of Allegiance by dean Taylor,
the drummers wife and other stories,
other martyrs mirror style stories,
Christmas Carol Kauffman seems to be popular, and Pablo Yoder has some good books too
Some books on courtship and dating, I personally like the book before you meet Prince charming, but maybe some people have better options,
lots of things coblenz,
We Sought and Found, although I thought maybe it was a little cheesy,
some hymn history books would be nice,
whatever that book is called about the guys who were COs in World War I.
There’s a book by Steve Ebersole about talking to your children about the facts of life. I forget the name of it.
The book about 20 little fingers under the bathroom door. Maybe someone else remembers the actual name of that.

Haven’t actually finished this book, but there’s a book that my friend told me about called Desperate by Sarah Mae and Sally Clarkson for moms. No promises that it’s good since I haven’t finished it, but the first few chapters were pretty good, and it’s great for moms who don’t have everything together.

I agree. Books that provide Christian teaching on marriage, family life, and the Beatitudes would certainly be a start for those who run to Jesus and have only been exposed to the corruption of secular culture. The John Coblentz books suggested by Ernie are very good.

Personally, I would add that keeping an inventory of less expensive Bibles to give away is helpful. So very many do not own one nor were raised in a home with one. Many more cannot afford the $40+ editions. Perhaps Neto can point you toward a source for gift Bibles?

I applaud your efforts to leaven our culture with the Gospel and to teach others about God. We shall pray for your success.

Wife: I don’t think so, I think it’s something Christian aid ministries sells. Maybe Zehr would know or someone else, but it follows this guy who is in a CO camp, and I think there were a few non-anabaptist people as well, including a black guy who was either Methodist or Pentecostal, and they had a harder time of it than those from the historic peace churches. That guy might have been mentioned in relation to when they were making them watch some shows or something.

Yes, Mennonite Soldier is a much older book, one that came out before Aid for Romania started.

I don't know of such a source, but I will tell you what a man in our congregation decided, one who is active in both prison ministry and in local jail services as well - that giving a good quality Bible goes a long way to demonstrate the value the giver is placing on the recipient (creating self-worh, knowing that someone has confidence in them as being a worthy recipient), and it also creates a sense of the value of the Scripture as well. So the local Christian book store gives a quantity discount, and our congregation's ministries board picks up the remaining costs.
