I don’t know what they matched me with. That’s what I’m wondering. TSA takes a photo at security. But this was at the gate to board the plane, where one typically scans their boarding pass. I don’t scan anything, they scanned me. And I didn’t show any ID.

I don’t remember giving the airline a picture. However, I am flying internationally. And so the best I can think of is that they are getting it off my passport somewhere, even though I did not present my passport to anyone at all today. I used my Real ID to go through security. One does have to enter in one’s passport number and expiration online prior to flying. But I don’t remember the photo part.

I'm not at all convinced that everyone wants the government tracking us so closely.

I don't remember voting on this. Seems like the government just went ahead and did it. The invasion of our privacy is exponential and stunning.
Well, Congress passed laws instituting this and has so far failed to repeal anything.

… who are boarding domestic flights?

The principal way they locate people subject to removal (I wouldn’t call them “undocumented”, since they are actually documented quite well) is via apps like Facebook where the user consents to share their location. It is surprising how little anyone talks about this.

Things happen that are bipartisan and pass without haggling. In my view this has been specially true wrt military decisions. CAREER politicians.

MIC and best interests of Congress people generally go quickly and under the public’s radar.

Interesting how that works.

Very likely, the first time you used that passport with that airline they scanned it. That is probably not sufficient resolution to identify you from a group of millions; out of the few hundred on your flight it might be. But they are actually using the TSA Traveler Verification Service that shows up in other parts of the airport as well, accessed by the airlines and CBP.

For the security lines, TSA has Touchless ID which uses facial recognition, but you opt into that with the airline and the eligibility is noted on your boarding pass like Precheck would be. Clear (a private company) does facial recognition based on the biometric information you give them when registering for their system; that's (supposedly at least) separate from the TSA database.

When returning to the US, Global Entry has used facial recognition for a while. Now even those without GE might be directed to Enhanced Passenger Processing which works similarly. Or you can use the Mobile Passport Control app where you take a selfie.

If you ever suffer amnesia, just go to the airport and they will tell you who you are.
The use of biometrics technology at CBP stems from the 9/11 Commission Report, which authorized the federal government to use an automated system to record the arrivals and departures of visitors at all air, land, and sea ports of entry.
The technology development shouldn't be all that surprising. At least 25 years ago, Brother Yun ("The Heavenly Man") was fleeing China on a fake passport and felt God telling him to remain silent as he went through exit control. He didn't know why at the time, but later found out that voice recognition had just been implemented there and he would almost certainly have been identified and apprehended if he had spoken.

Probably something like that.
TSA wants more biometric data from PreCheck travelers

In a notice posted to the Federal Register on Jan. 15, the agency said it is considering introducing a mobile biometric ID for PreCheck users and will expand its biometric information sharing with other sections of the Department of Homeland Security.

Under the proposed changes, TSA will share fingerprints with Customs and Border Protection to speed up Global Entry enrollment. It's part of the push by DHS to create a more unified single experience for Trusted Traveler enrollees.

The agency will also expand its biometric screening capabilities, which it says will lead to faster processing at TSA.

The proposed changes would also allow biometric data to be used for continuous vetting of Trusted Traveler applicants for criminal and security risks, rather than a one-time screening during the application process

I don’t have PreCheck or Clear or Global Entry.
