Re: Field Guide to Plain culture

Then Mennonite name game was a totally new 'thing' to me and I have never run into it anywhere but in Mennonite circles. I remember one time 3 of us non Mennonite women having fun playing the Mennonite name game in a very mocking way as we had all encountered the same thing- what is your maiden name...

Re: Field Guide to Plain culture

For someone who is not culturally anabaptist and comes into the circle- especially by marriage- can be a bit disconcerting. I married into a Conservative Mennonite family and my name does not fit anyone's pigeon hole to place me in. In fact some even thought I was Jewish because I shared the same la...

Re: What does "plain" mean to you?

Ken your post resonated with me. I married into a very conservative Mennonite family. The week before we were married there was a family reunion for my husband to be's family and I was present. Each family stood up and I don't recall what other said, if anything but my father in law to be talked abo...

Re: Interior Decorating - General Practices

Thanks! My wife seemed to think so, so that was a positive thing!
And that is what counts.

Re: Interior Decorating - General Practices

All our trim in the house is painted white. We have blue in one room, a gray/green in main room and a different green in another and white in the other 2 rooms and all have white trim. Really livens it up and we like it. Truthfully is there really a 'way' to do things anymore? I see so many differen...

Re: How far do you drive (walk?) to church?

Living in a rural area there aren't too many local churches and being in a largely Methodist area- not my choice of church. For the last 3 years we are driving about 15-20 min before that we just stayed put as we had a home church which met at our house- met for 26 years.

Re: Your Preferred Bible Version

I grew up with KJV tho our church uses RSV. When we were first married we changed to NIV and then later used NASV. My husband uses ESV. But both of us like to go online and occasionally look at other translations to clarify or just the way it's written in other versions can sometimes just add some d...

Re: What does "plain" mean to you?

I have seen plain in my in laws as very uniform dress for men and women even to shoes and hose and how big the covering and strings vs no strings. If people choose to do this, I have no problem with it, my issue comes when they judge me for not doing this without talking with me or seeing where I am...

Re: Valentine's Day?

You can very easily show someone you love them, you care for them and not spend a lot of money. Yes I have had flowers sent to my husbands office for Valentine's Day just for something different. But I have bought fruit- dipped it in chocolate and made it into a bouquet for a gift too. We used to ma...
