Re: Trump Convicted

But I'm a little mystified by your argument that falsifying information on 1099s that you submit to the IRS is not a crime. For instance, if you do this to intentionally mislead about hush money paid to a prostitute, I think it could be. Perhaps the Mosaic Law is not the same as modern American tax...

Re: Trump Convicted

Actually, we don't know that "he structured the payments so as to fraudulently claim them as a business deduction." If you read the jury instructions and the discussion surrounding them you will see that the tax fraud argument is based on him structuring and reporting the payments as inco...

Re: Trump Convicted

Fraud is a deception deliberately practiced to secure unfair or unlawful gain. Another definition is the intentional misrepresentation of truth in order to obtain something of value by inducing another to rely upon false information. Can you describe the unlawful or unfair gain? Hiding hush money p...

Re: Trump Convicted

Polls and fund raising is saying something different. Polls and fund raising measure political passion. And Trump is good at whipping up political passion. I hope we never live in a country where people are found guilty or innocent on the basis of polls and fund raising. Or media talking points. Or...

Re: Trump Convicted

Yes, they talk about how the money was reported to the IRS as having been paid to Cohen as income, but a 1099 is an informational return - a business has to file a 1099 if they make certain payments to others regardless of whether those payments are tax deductible. All the discussion about tax trea...

Re: Trump Convicted

Mechan, on the other hand, promised no vengeance, encouraged the jury to reach their own conclusions, and was careful to do things by the book . According the Alan Dershowitz and Johnathan Turley, along with many other legal experts I have heard of late, he went way outside the book on multiple ite...

Re: Trump Convicted

Seems a lot of people disagree with the verdict. They are putting their money where their mouth is. Sure, Trump is doing a good job of politicizing this and promising political vengeance. Trump knows how to raise money off of partisan outrage and grievance. But he and his lawyer did not seem to be ...

Re: Trump Convicted

Also, search for the string "1099" to see what was said about 1099s that were submitted. For instance: They include Cohen's bank opening records at First Republic Bank for both Resolution Consultants and Essential Consultants; the bank paperwork for the wire transfer to Keith Davidson; th...

Re: Trump Convicted

And the discussion here on MN has no rules of evidence. So yeah, I'll take a jury trial over social media any day. I try to hold myself to a high standard for rules of evidence. And I encourage you to do the same. I have searched rather intensively and cannot find the evidence you claim in the post...

I have no idea. I wasn't there. It wasn't televised. And I haven't read all 94 pages of trial transcripts. Knock yourself out if you are curious: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/05/30/nyregion/trump-hush-money-trial-transcript-may-29.html?u2g=i&unlocked_article_code=1.wE0.FzNI.mXQ7AHRb...
