Re: Three types of Anabaptists - which one are you? [POLL]

I marked "third way Anabaptist," with the caveat that although war and capital punishment may sometimes be conducted wrongly, they fall in with the authority of "the sword" that God has given to civil authorities. I recognize that authority at the same time as I stand apart from ...

Re: Following scripture in regards to the sick…

Yes, my Beachy church practices anointing with oil for any sick one that requests it. For us, elder is a term that refers to any man appointed on the leadership team. Is it a special oil that is used? Is it blessed or simply applied? No, there is nothing special about the oil. Rather, our prayers e...

Re: Following scripture in regards to the sick…

Do people actually follow what it says here in James 5:14-16 14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he ha...

Re: Revival Meetings

Our church calls them special meetings. Covid has thrown a spoke in, but a couple years ago what we were trying for was one week of special meetings (spring) and one weekend church retreat (fall). I agree the revivalist emphasis on emotionalism is unfortunate. That was prominent in my Baptist backgr...

Re: How conservative are you?

[quote=Josh post_id=140866 One of our local CMC affiliates has a pastor who claims he grew up Amish; he actually grew up Beachy. I’ve always found this a bit curious. [/quote] I go to a Beachy church. Some of the people here grew up Old or New Order, some Beachy, some miscellaneous conservatives. (A...

Re: Because MN wouldn't be fun...

Those who vote for "ordinance" may be interested to know that prior to 130 years ago, nobody in the Anabaptist world considered the head covering to be one of The Seven Ordinances. If the word "ordinance" was used at all, it was in a very general way that applied to all biblical...

Re: Because MN wouldn't be fun...

I'm a woman who wears a covering. It always gets me how often this practice is defined in terms of a woman wearing the covering, rather than a man not covering his head during prayer/worship. I think they're equally important in this ordinance. Can you say more about this? What do you see as import...

Re: Haiti Kidnapping

Wow. That's such a stellar example of taking a verse out of context that I have to point it out: Exodus 21 is discussing punishments for intentional and accidental wrongdoing, *not* anything remotely close to paying ransom for kidnapping.
