Re: Curse of Ham
Ken, I'd be curious what reason you would give for Noah cursing Canaan and not Ham. I do not see how that would make narrative or moral sense apart from the interpretation Swiss and I have put forth. What kind of "moral sense" does it make to curse a baby because of how he was conceived? ...

Re: Curse of Ham
How should we then read it? Ham went into Noahs tent and saw Noah in the nude? And for that Noah cursed Ham‘s son? How does that make sense? I assure you I do not get the jollies from indecency but the Bible contains many passages that show us human depravity. We can‘t just skip the parts we don‘t ...

Re: A Hobbit, A Wardrobe, and a Great War...
... In fact, the Scouring of the Shire is essentially arguing that the heroics "out there" enable the "small" heroics. Gandalf points says that hobbits' participation in the War of the Ring was preparing them to lead the fight back home. You have lain your finger exactly on the ...

Re: A Hobbit, A Wardrobe, and a Great War...
This is what I like about Tolkien. War is bad, but people do heroic and laudable things in war; but also, it would be better if people valued food and song more than gold and silver. :P I enjoy Tolkien but that synopsis, although reasonably accurate, leaves me cold. Why maximize human autonomy in m...

Has anyone here read this book? A Hobbit, A Wardrobe, and a Great War: How J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis Rediscovered Faith, Friendship, and Heroism in the Cataclysm of 1914-18 This looks interesting! I'm an avid fan of Tolkien's writing and have found value in reading his biography. It gave me a d...

Re: Orthodox and Anabaptist Understandings Regarding Original Sin
Interesting question. I think at least part of the urge toward believer's baptism came from ecclesiology not theology but I can't say if that was definitive. If my memory serves Sattler wrote/taught a significant amount about a pure church, that is a church composed only of regenerated believers. H...

Re: Orthodox and Anabaptist Understandings Regarding Original Sin
What similarities and possible differences are there between the Orthodox and Traditional Anabaptist Understandings of Original Sin? Do you happen to have some good resources for Traditional Anabaptist understandings of Original Sin? I'm not familiar with it. As an aside, I'd be interested in readi...
