Re: Common Christian practices that are not taught in scripture

Debating and arguing I think I have to disagree with this one. How else does one explain all the discussions between Jesus and the Pharisees? They were debating the meaning of scriptures. I also think it’s been established that it was Jewish tradition to debate the scriptures. I don’t think it was ...

Re: Headcovering advice

Praying for you, Swiss bro, and your wife Swiss sis. Do you feel you are in good relationship with your church still. Make sure you don't have resentment over this current issue or others. Examining yourself and discerning the body is important when taking the Lord's supper. I am not accusing you, b...

Re: New Testament teaching on Interest/Usury

I am going to try to give a straightforward answer to the question without "interpretation or textual analysis" (although I think the first is nearly impossible to do without and the latter is a very important tool for discer ing the whole counsel of God). Question: "Do Jesus and/or H...

Re: New Testament teaching on Interest/Usury

It should also be noted that in medieval Europe Jews were largely prohibited from owning property and participating in craft guilds (carpentry, masonry, textile making, etc.). And so were prohibited from farming and most ordinary trades that involved working with their hands unless they converted t...

Re: New Testament teaching on Interest/Usury

The Story of Usury Across Time Old Testament In the Old Testament, the Isrealites were given two basic rules about economic relationships: (1) those who have should be nonhesitant in lending to their fellow Jews who have not and (2) such lenders should expect the principle back, but should not expe...

Re: New Testament teaching on Interest/Usury

I notice, though, that you aren't talking about Jesus going "much further" on the issue of loaning money (the idea of not expecting the principal to be returned). You're focusing specifically on not charging interest. That's perfectly fine, I don't have a problem with it, but I am curious...

Re: Sermon Topics

A great topic. Anabaptists generally don't focus on Old Testament law but rather on the teachings of Jesus. Luke 6 doesn't actually address usury. It goes much further, promoting the idea of lending without expecting the principal to be returned. But Jesus did not seem to be setting up such as a la...

Re: Sermon Topics

In our church, the ministers recently put out a suggestion box for sermon topics. What are some topics you think should be addressed more often than they are (at your own church or anywhere)? Economic justice, particularly usury. Usury is a HUGE topic in the OT, and the practice of lending, who to ...

Re: Pacifism is heresy according to the Russian Orthodox Church

As far as I know, this has been the doctrine of the apostolic churches for over a thousand years and instead they would support “just war” doctrine. Most modern day Protestants would also agree. For example, very few denominations would be willing to condemn Ukrainians taking up arms in defence aga...
