Re: "Traditional Pennsylvania Dutch" Foods?

It could mean "stupid". But in PA Dutch, "so dumm" is "so dumb" https://www.wordhippo.com/what-is/the/german-word-for-dumb.html Wife: may be a “dumb” question, but would German/Pennsylvania Dutch be similar to English, in having more than one meaning for the word dumb?...

Re: "Traditional Pennsylvania Dutch" Foods?

While I don’t consider myself an expert here, I believe “Don’t be stupid” would be a more accurate translation. It could mean "stupid". But in PA Dutch, "so dumm" is "so dumb" https://www.wordhippo.com/what-is/the/german-word-for-dumb.html Wife: may be a “dumb” questio...

Re: Revival Meetings in Evangelical/Mainline Anabaptist

I am not convinced that the Mennonite church as a whole gained more from the revivalist movement than they lost. Melvin Lehman talks about the spiritual mediocrity that was prevalent in Chambersburg in his youth. Some people began praying that God would send a man who could arouse them from their l...

Re: Marrying Someone With a Promiscuous Past

Therefore, it is not worth taking steps to mitigate a risk that is almost solely due to promiscuity. As far as girls marrying a guy with a promiscuous past… many (I’d say the majority) of girls in my church circles would be unwilling to do so. An interesting statement made by Josh caught my eye. I ...

Re: MennoNet and Genealogy

It is interesting to me that there are numerous words in the PA Deutsch that are also in Yiddish. I am not sure which direction the ' contamination ' went but I am guessing it was Schwaben Deutsch words that were taken into the Yiddish. Yiddish is influenced by High German, not Schwaben Deutsch. As...

Re: MennoNet and Genealogy

When talking with people who use the English word 'Dutch' to refer to what in the language itself they call 'Datsch', I say 'Holland Dutch, not PA Dutch'. But THEY are the ones who are using the 'wrong' word - that's not my fault, and I don't mind 'educating people', if they want to listen. As an A...

Re: Toronto area

Going to Toronto area a week from now. Any plain churches to recommend? Enos and Carolyn Miller at Tea-n-Bannock Restaurant used to meet in their restaurant for church. I’ve never been, but I can guarantee that time spent with Enos is fascinating! Does anyone know the name of this church? You may n...
