Re: Philippians Study 2022, 1:1-11

You got my attention with speaking about being a "slave of Christ" and I was wondering why we are sometimes called 'servants' and other times 'slaves'. I found this link interesting that suggests there is a difference between the two - https://www.whatchristianswanttoknow.com/what-does-it...

Re: Philippians Study 2022, 1:1-11

I will eventually get to the "eternal security" question posed by Sudsy earlier in the thread, but it might be a few days :).

Re: Philippians Study 2022, 1:1-11

This section of the text breaks down nicely into a greeting or salutation in verses 1-2, followed by Paul's thanksgiving and prayer in verses 3-11. The greeting is translated as as follows in the ESV: Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, ...

Re: Philippians Study 2022, 1:1-11

I'm turning my attention to this thread now. I plan to start the next section (1:12-26) two weeks from now, on Thursday, July 21. As a side note to the moderators - it was hard for me to find this thread via search, because the headings on the posts are wrong (they say "Re: Philippians Study 2...

Re: Philippians Study 2022: Background and context

As it is now July 7, I'm going to shift my attention to the thread on Philippians chapter 1, verses 1-11.

People can feel free to keep posting on this thread - just try to keep any new posts on the general topic of background and context for the book of Philippians.

Re: Philippians Study 2022: Background and context

If you could pick one Bible verse to serve as a sort of summary of Philippians, which would you pick? (Maybe this question would be better answered after our study is finished.) Thomas Aquinas in his commentary on Philippians picked Proverbs 4:18: But the path of the righteous is like the light of d...

Re: Philippians Study 2022: Background and context

My understanding is that Paul was speaking about preachers of the Gospel that were in Philippi. It will be interesting to dig into this more when we arrive at that part of the text. It seems to me from the surrounding context that Paul is speaking about preachers in the place from which he was writ...
