We have a Wesleyan congregation in our neighbourhood that had outgrown their old building. They put up a new building, with lots of room and were serious about attracting Natives from the local reserve. Instead they ended up almost filling the building with former Baptists, Christian Reformed, Pentecostals, Mennonites and United church people.
In a recent conversation with an old order acquaintance, he mentioned an interest in getting involved with the CAM sign ministry. When he spoke with his local bishop about this, the bishop was concerned that this might result in the church having to deal with unpleasant issues like divorce and remarriage. Wouldn't it be something if we were to get involved in some work that would result in people disturbing our peace, as seekers and converts and near-converts come into our midst?

Just had to comment on this. I know this is an old thread but for some reason that South African song has just now reached South Africa and the response has been quite amazing. Obviously it has hit a chord there. No pun intended.Sudsy wrote:Thanks, I enjoyed the harmony and some of you likely enjoyed the words also. I don't understand this singing not being in English unless it is mainly about the harmony. One thing I appreciate in A cappella singing is that the words are not drowned out by instruments.
Curious - what would be the purpose of singing in a language that most unchurched do not understand ? To me it is like speaking in a unknown tongue without an interpreter.

i believe this recording is from the late 1960’s.Oh Happy Day
Song by Edwin Hawkin Singers
LYRICS
Oh happy day (oh happy day)
Oh happy day (oh happy day)
When Jesus washed (when Jesus washed)
When Jesus washed (when Jesus washed)
When Jesus washed (when Jesus washed)
He washed my sins away (oh happy day)
Oh happy day (oh happy day)
He taught me how to watch, fight and pray, fight and pray
And live rejoicing every, everyday
Oh happy day
He taught me how
Oh happy day (oh happy day)
Oh happy day (oh happy day)
Oh happy day (oh happy day)

We were singing it from the 1902 Church and Sunday School Hymnal long before it got gospelized and popularized.temporal1 wrote:i thought of this thread, and wondered if Mennonites ever use this song?

i honestly cannot remember when i first heard the song. but i remember hearing the gospelized versions in the 60’s, and later.
i would enjoy hearing a Mennonite version.
when i heard it today, i thot of this thread’s flash mob and wondered what they might do with it.

We sang it at church in the past few weeks. It’s a fairly popular song in plain circles.

Growing up and watching cartoons, I learned a different song with the same melody. Because of that, we always sang the gospelized version of Happy Day.ohio jones wrote:We were singing it from the 1902 Church and Sunday School Hymnal long before it got gospelized and popularized.
Any idea which song was written first?

Is it biblical? Is it Christlike? Is it loving? Is it true? How can I find out?

not sure how they can sing without being moved to tears. this baffles me.
i had tears, listening.
there is just something about those simple lyrics combined with that expressive melody.
it is the simplicity of Jesus’ offer that makes it so profound.
i’ll listen again with my family later today.
thank you.
are you in the choir? or present?

Re: Mennonite Flash Mob
We listened together.
it was such a hit, i went back to the OP to the Flash Mob link.
i got to explain to my grdaughter what a flash mob is.
she enjoyed it.
i went through the posts, found that Max had shared the Oh Happy Day link - on Page 3!
that’s ok. it bears repeating.
