Let's talk nuts!

Post by steve-in-kville »

I'm limited to ten options and had to leave pine nuts off the list. Vote for your three favorite nuts (or mixed nuts). I'm sure I am forgetting something. Discuss as needed.

close fight with Cashews and Pistachios. Nothing like a good Pecan though.

Of course, Hazelnuts is second or first depending on my mood. I'm from Oregon(last place anyway) after all.

Salted almonds or cashews are a favorite. As well as walnuts. Mixed nuts make for a quick snack.

I bring my homemade trail mix to work and cashews are part. I used to have almonds but I decided hazelnuts were better. I also add peanuts but its more of a filler.

Interesting to hear a non-Oregonian use the word filbert instead of hazelnut.
And just to be clear, hazelnuts and filberts are the same nut.

Filberts were renamed in the 1980s because “hazelnut” is the recognized global-market term. Miffed older native Oregonians grouse that it’s just a marketing ploy, but they are surely losing this “one true name” power struggle.

This is a list where the three that I like best really don't line up with the three I can afford. :)

I didn't know this until recently but mixed nuts that can be bought in the store have up to 50% peanuts. "Deluxe" mixed nuts are way less than that and "premium" mixed nuts have none at all. And the price will reflect that accordingly.

Hard to choose because along with pistachios, walnuts and pecans love cashews and almonds then hazel nuts. I usually buy mixed nuts- deluxe as I can no longer eat peanuts as they don't like me. Prefer walnuts and pecans roasted but will eat them either way. Love to mix nuts, dark - 72% chocolate chips and some cheerios for a GF snack.

Yes, just like the cheaper seasonings have larger proportions of salt.

Black walnuts are my favorite, but they are not usually thought of by the name "walnuts".
