I'm completely puzzled as to why you use MennoNet. Do you really refuse to use to communicate with circle letters?
I didn’t criticise Facebook use, but I did criticise the given reason. When people say they need Facebook to communicate with family, they aren’t being honest with themselves. Families communicated with each other and stayed in touch before 2006 (and students managed to socialise before 2004).

People could say they WANT to use it, but NEED to use it? The only valid “need” I can see is using Marketplace to buy and sell used stuff. And maybe a distant second, using discussion forums via FB to talk about some topic like gardening or where to buy Happy Baby carriers.

One of the most absurd excuses for FB I heard was someone who said they needed it to communicate with missionaries.

The only legitimate reason I have encountered for using Facebook is that there are some very good private groups there focused on specific things.

For example, there are excellent private groups for AP Chemistry teachers and AP Biology teachers that a lot of experienced teachers participate in. These can be hugely useful, especially for new teachers as they have a nationwide (or worldwide) group of people to ask questions and share information with. I got a lot of useful advice and shared materials on those groups and there aren't any good alternatives that I know of. You have to request to join and prove that you are an actual AP teacher by submitting documents before they let you in.

If relatives are not speaking to you, Facebook is a way to keep up with their news. If they haven't blocked you.

Myself, I'm not on it, nor do I ever plan to be. I marvel at the selfies of some people. One pastor looking for a wife has his nine photo spots filled with selfies of himself, mostly basically alike. ??
