The American car industry was fumbling but the Japanese were busy making practical and reliable cars for the most part, at least by the mid 80's. If by design you refer to style, well, maybe not....

The carpeting colors weren't great either.

There were some amazing vehicles, like the diesel Ford Escort in 1985 (pushing 50mpg) or a 1990 Honda CR-x (getting over 50mpg on gasoline).

Makes me wonder why we can’t have a vehicle as cheap and simple as that CRX today.

They're kinda on the ugly side.

Everything (made in the States) after 1961 or 62 is ugly in my opinion. Except for the 65 Barracuda and the Valiant. Maybe a few others. (But then the 49 through 54 models do nothing for me, either.) Well, I really liked the looks of the 2nd Gen Chrysler Town & Country as well. (93 - 95, as I recall. We had a 93.) If I keep it up, I'll think of more exceptions....

50 years ago a colleague of mine bought a bright red 1973 Dodge Charger with a white vinyl roof and white leather seats. It certainly turned heads when it pulled into the faculty parking lot.

Thanks guys. I was wondering why these still haven’t sold.

Most guys my age are really into muscle cars. I never have been interested. I even always preferred 4 door cars, even back when there was nothing less cool than a "more door". (Except for the 62 Valiant. The four door just never looked quite right to me, around the rear side window frame area.) My oldest brother still has the 66 Charger he bought while in HS, in 70 or 71. He's been working on rebuilding it for some years now already, but I think he's going to pass it on to one of his sons, hoping that he will get it finished while he (my brother) can still get a chance to drive it again.

I have never cared about owning a muscle car either. Many of my colleagues however made it a point to buy one when they entered their 40s. I suppose it was a fad at that time.

Like you, I prefer the 4door, always have. The best car I have ever owned was a plain white 1968 Toyota that I bought used from a car rental company. I had that car until 1990 when I gave it to one of our sons as a commuter. It never failed to start and was still running well when he sold it.
